Procedure FAQs

This page discusses the procedures to be followed for taking excess or extra credits, taking courses at another college for Lehman credit, declaring your major and minor, trying to get into a closed class, getting a transcript, filing for graduation, and picking up your diploma.

I want to take a lot of courses this semester. What should I do?

You may take up to 18 credits during the fall and spring semesters and up to 2 courses during each summer session without special permission. If you wish to take more credits, you must meet these conditions:

  • You must have passed or been exempted from all CUNY/ACT Skills Assessment Tests.
  • You must have completed the English Composition Requirement (either by passing ENG 121 or its equivalent, or by examination).
  • Your G.P.A. (overall or cumulative grade point average) must be 3.0 or better.
  • You must not have any Incomplete (INC) grades pending from the previous semester.
  • Your transcript must not show a pattern of withdrawals.

If you meet these requirements, you may receive permission to register for up to 3 excess credits (21 total credits) during the last week or so of registration by getting the appropriate form from the Academic Information and Advisement Center in Shuster 280. Check with the Academic Information and Advisement Center in Shuster 280 for the starting date of the excess credit permission period.

If you have already taken 21 credits successfully in one semester, you may receive permission to register for up to 24 credits. Any request for more than 24 credits must be submitted as a written appeal to the Lehman appeals committee (Committee on Admissions, Evaluation, and Academic Standards, or CAEAS) in the Academic Information and Advisement Center in Shuster 280 during the official Drop/Add period.

I want to take a course at another college.

The procedure differs depending on whether you want to take a course at another CUNY college, or at a non-CUNY school.

When should I declare my major (and/or minor) and where do I go to declare it (them)?

How can I get into a closed class?

In most cases, students are unable to get into closed classes. However, if special circumstances exist (for example, if this is your last semester at Lehman and you need a specific course to fulfill your graduation requirements), consult the appropriate Department Chair or the Instructor of the course you need.
