The Jerome G. Sala Memorial Competition
The Lehman Music Department holds an annual concerto competition named in memory of Jerome G. Sala. Known as "Gino" to his friends, for 20 years Professor Sala taught music history, instrumental methods, and was the founding director of the Lehman College Community Band.
The competition is open to any high school student who plays a wind band or mallet percussion instrument, and who resides in the lower Hudson region, including New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Fairfield, and Northern New Jersey. Each candidate must play a solo suitable to be performed with wind band, e.g. Haydn Trumpet Concerto, Chaminade Concertino for Flute, etc. It is strongly recommended participants audition with an accompanist, or bring a pre-recorded accompaniment CD (audio system will be provided upon request). Judging is based both on technical skill and artistic presentation.
The first place winner receives a $500 award and performs his/her piece with the Lehman College Community Band at it's May concert. Awarding of the first prize is contingent upon the winner's availability on the date of the performance.
The second place winner will have an opportunity to perform with the Lehman Band at a later date, schedule permitting.
The Fourteenth Annual Jerome G. Sala Concerto Competition will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015 from 4p.m. to 7p.m. on the third floor of the Lehman Music Building. Applications are due no later than March 25th, and the concert at which the winner will perform will be held on Sunday, May 17th, 2015 at 2p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre.
