Certified Nursing Assistant Programs at Lehman College in the Bronx New York City

There is an ongoing demand for qualified, certified and caring health care personnel who work directly with patients and their families. Our programs provide credentialed training for those seeking employment in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, home health agencies and clinics. Students must complete all required courses to be eligible to take the National Healthcare Association (NHA) credentialing examination for the EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, or Nurse Technician Program.

Electrocardiography (EKG) Technician

The electrocardiography technician prepares patients for and administers the EKG. EKG technicians also may assist with Holter monitor and stress testing. Positions are available in a great variety of health care settings as well as labs. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exam Prerequisites: Current NYS Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or LPN, proof of anatomy & physiology course, or coordinator’s permission; attend an orientation and career session. Prerequisite or corequisite: CPR100: CPR for Health Care Providers or current national certification from the American Heart Association (AHA). Proof of high school/GED/TASC completion and short essay required. *NOTE: white lab coat and textbook fee not included.

Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomy technicians draw blood samples for diagnosis and treatment. They also prepare these samples and maintain equipment and supplies. Positions are available in many inpatient and outpatient health care facilities as well as labs. After successful completion of the course, students are eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exam. Prerequisites: Current NYS Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or LPN, proof of anatomy & physiology course, or coordinator’s permission; attend an orientation and career session. Prerequisite or corequisite: CPR100: CPR for Health Care Providers or current national certification from the American Heart Association (AHA). Proof of high school/GED/TASC completion and short essay required. *NOTE: $105 PLB required testing fee to be paid online at NHANOW.com; white lab coat and textbook fee not included.

Patient Care Technician/ Nurse Technician

The Patient Care Technician (PCT/PCA) Nurse Technician program trains students for positions as advanced nursing assistants under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or doctor. They monitor patients’ health conditions; maintain records; take vital signs; administer EKGs; collect blood and urine samples; and assist patients with bathing, toileting, dressing and eating, transferring and exercises. Upon successful completion of the program, students may take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exam. Prerequisites: Current NYS Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or LPN, proof of anatomy & physiology course, or coordinator’s permission; attend an orientation and career session. Prerequisite or corequisite: CPR100: CPR for Health Care Providers or current national certification from the American Heart Association (AHA). Financial Assistance

The Patient Care Technician (PCT/PCA)/Nurse Technician program is qualified for Workforce1 ITG Vouchers. Individual Training Grant (ITG) vouchers are issued from Workforce1 Career Centers and provide funding for occupational skills training that leads to employment in New York City high-demand occupations.
