Personal Financial Planning

The Certificate Program in Personal Financial Planning (PFP) presents techniques to formulate and execute comprehensive financial plans that assist clients in accumulating, conserving and transferring personal wealth.  REQUIREMENTS FOR CFP® CERTIFICATION: Students who successfully complete the program may apply for the CFP® certification exam. In addition, passing the CFP® Certification Examination plus fulfilling experience, undergraduate degree, and ethics requirements can lead to certification by CFP board, granting the individual the right to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and    certification marks. Detailed requirements for CFP certification can be found at www.CFP.net. NOTE: The certification marks and     are owned by the Certified Financial Board of Standards, Inc. Prerequisites: 60 college credits required; completed bachelor’s degree preferred; functional knowledge of financial analysis techniques and a basic understanding of economics.

Program certification: In order to receive a program certificate, students must complete a program application ($25), successfully complete all course requirements listed at the time of applying, and submit a certificate request form ($7). Introduction to Financial Planning

Introduction to the principles and analytic techniques of personal financial management.Topics include overview of the economic environment, time value of money concepts, CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, regulatory environment, communication skills, the financial planning process; how to gather process and analyze client information, and to provide a written plan with recommendations as to risk management, investments, tax strategies, retirement planning and estate planning. For certificate program enrollees, this course is a recommended prerequisite to all other courses. Includes mastery of the use of the financial calculator.

Risk Management

 Survey of risk management, primarily in the areas of life, health, casuality and liability insurance. Includes analysis of risk exposure, evaluation techniques for various insurance plans, and contract selection criteria from a cost-benefit standpoint.

The candidate is introduced to the basic insurance contract and practical insurance checklists and to the principles of taxation as related to insurance premiums and benefits. The role of insurance in retirement and estate planning is also discussed.

Financial Plan DevelopmentCourse (Online)

Using financial planning software, students learn multiple approaches to identifying and planning for a client’s goals and risks and applying the CFP® Board’s Practice Standards. Offered in conjunction with Dalton Education, this course is a program requirement and part of the CFP Board’s education requirement. N.Y.S. CPE Credit

The Lehman College SCPS is approved by the N.Y.S. Education De- partment State Board for Public Accountancy to offer certified public accpuntants and/or public accountants mandatory CPE credits under N.Y.S. License # 002749. Noted with the courses in the Personal Financial Planning Program and the IRS Enrolled Agent Preparation Program are the number of hours of CPE credits and the CPE subject area(s) coveredd. Upon completion of the course, participants receive certificate(s) of completion. Participants must inform the instructor(s) at the first class meeting that the course is being taken for mandatory CPE hours for N.Y.S. Licensed accountants.
