The Graduate Program in Literacy Studies is targeted towards teachers who want to be better prepared to work with all children on their reading and writing skills. The literacy graduate program prepares students to work as literacy specialists who may want to become literacy coaches/leaders, reading teachers, community educators, curriculum specialists, and school administrators. Some graduates may also enter doctoral programs.
We invite teachers to join us in our commitment to the creation of rich learning environments that support and encourage social justice for all learners and their diverse communities. Program candidates will develop the capacity to serve all learning styles, to engage with current research, methodology and theoretical advancements.
We currently offer three different programs that lead to a master of science in education.
- 36 Credit program in Literacy Studies for birth-6th grade. Registered in New York State and fully accredited by CAEP, the program leads to a professional certificate in literacy in early childhood and childhood education.
- 36 Credit program in Literacy Studies for 5th-12th grade. Registered in New York State and fully accredited by CAEP, the program leads to a professional certificate in literacy in middle childhood and adolescent education.
- 45-48 Credit Dual Certification Program in Literacy and Special Education. This program leads to dual certification in literacy for birth-6th grade and special education in childhood education for 1st-6th grade.
