Welcome to our Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) Mathematics Achievement with Teachers of High need Urban Population (MATH-UP) website.

Lehman College’s School of Education recently received over 7.6 million dollars in ARRA funding to prepare 125 pre-service teachers over five years with specialized expertise in mathematics and teaching English language learners and students with special needs.  The Lehman College MATH-UP pre-service teachers will be placed in one of the five participating  South Bronx schools to complete a year-long clinical internship (5 days a week, 5 hours a day) while completing their 42 credits graduate program.

The TQP MATH-UP program targets college seniors studying in any major area, with interest and competency in mathematics who have a desire to teach at the elementary school level. MATH-UP participants engage in a one-year internship in a South Bronx school while taking courses toward a BA/MSED in Childhood Education with a specialization in mathematics and/or with a certification extension in bilingual Education {if qualified}. We participate with 5 Bronx schools and provide two years of mentoring and professional development throughout this innovative graduate program.

The 5th year TQP MATH-UP teacher preparation program begins in the senior year as students complete their undergraduate studies and graduate with a baccalaureate degree in one of the liberal arts and sciences.

The 5th year TQP MATH-UP program of study comprises of 5 semesters of graduate study resulting in initial and professional certification in childhood education (grades 1 - 6) with an optional certification extension in bilingual education.
