National Council on Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE)
The School of Education at Lehman College, CUNY is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), 2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036 (202-466-7496). This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs. NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel.
Earning this accreditation by a Professional Education Unit indicates that the Unit's Programs in Teacher Education meet the highest national standards. NCATE represents a coalition of 33 professional associations of teachers, teacher educators, content specialists and local and state policy makers.
In October of 2002, Lehman College's School of Education was awarded NCATE Accreditation. Lehman was the first of the CUNY Colleges to receive this accreditation. Our work toward accreditation and maintaining accreditation spans the last seven years and has involved the redesign of all of our teacher education programs and the development of a comprehensive Professional Development Network with local schools.
In April of 2007, the Division of Education completed its continuing accreditation visit. In Fall 2007 The NCATE Unit Accreditation Board approved re-accreditation for Lehman's Professional Education Unit through Spring 2014.
Congratulations to our entire division, faculty, staff, students and alumni, as well as to the many individuals from across our campus who helped us reach this significant milestone.
