Information for Majors

The Political Science major prepares students for careers in law, government, public administration, teaching, non-profit services, journalism, and international organizations.

The fields of study are as follows:

  • American Politics
  • Political Theory and Methods of Political Analysis
  • Comparative and Area Studies
  • International Politics
  • Law and Politics
  • Public Policy and Administration

Requirement for a Major in Political Science

39 credits total = 33 POL credits + 6 related credits

  • 33 POL credits = 11 courses
  • 9 required credits
    • POL 166, American Political Systems (3 credits)
    • POL 245, Political Analysis and Interpretation (3 credits)
    • One Course from Political Theory chosen from
      POL 226, 227, 228, 319, 321, or 322
  • 24 elective credits
    • Students may select any eight POL courses at the 200-, 300-, or 400-level in any field. (It is recommended that students take 200-level courses first.)
    • Take at least four courses at the 300- or 400- level
    • Students may also take POL 470, 471, or 365 and do some internships in NYC. For paid internship opportunities in Albany in the spring and Washington, D.C., in the summer, contact the Department for details about applying.
  • 6 related credits = 2 courses (Waived for double majors)
    • Select two from ANT 211, ECO 166, ECO 167, PHI 229 or ENW 201

Double Major in Political Science

33 POL credits, including POL 166, POL 245, and a political theory course. Transfer students may apply one to six approved credits to the major or minor.

Honors

  • Department Honors: Majors need an overall 3.2 GPA and a 3.5 GPA for Political Science, and POL 481 Honors Tutorial
  • College Honors: 60 credits at Lehman with a 3.4 GPA or higher

Pi Sigma Alpha is the National Political Science Honor Society
Required: 18 credits in Political Science with a 3.0 GPA and Political Science with a GPA of 3.2
