College to Honor Noted Photographer at Convocation Ceremony Sept. 17
Noted documentary photographer Frank Espada will be honored at Lehman’s annual Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, September 17, at 11 a.m. in the Lovinger Theatre. The event, which celebrates the start of the academic year, will also honor outstanding members of the faculty and staff. The entire Lehman community is invited.
A photographer for more than fifty years, Espada is best known for his Puerto Rican Diaspora project, which brought him to thirty-four locations throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, documenting the Puerto Rican migratory experience. His work on the project is featured in his book, The Puerto Rican Diaspora: Themes in the Survival of a People, published in 2006.
Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, Espada migrated to New York City with his family in 1939. He studied photography at the New York Institute of Photography, and with Gene Smith in the late 1950s. Over the years, he has worked as a grassroots organizer and political activist and was a founding organizer of the National Welfare Rights Organization, the National Latino Media Coalition, the National Hispanic Manpower Association, and the National Association of Puerto Rican Drug Abuse Programs, among others. He has served as executive vice president of the New York Urban Coalition and as deputy commissioner of New York City’s Community Development Agency.
Delivering the keynote address will be alumnus Carlos Ortiz ‘79, vice president and general counsel of Goya Foods. Ortiz joined Goya in 1989 as general counsel and has been responsible for protecting Goya's legal rights and interests. A certified public accountant, Ortiz holds a B.S. in accounting from Lehman and a Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School. As a student at Lehman, Ortiz was enrolled in the SEEK program, which he credits with helping him get started on his academic career.
Teacher of the Year Evelyn Ackerman (History) and Adjunct Teacher of the Year Jack Henning (Biological Sciences) will also address the convocation. Two Lehman staff members—Iasia Bailey (Payroll) and Henry Ovalles (Lehman Stages) will be honored for their service to the College.
