VI. Overview (Course Description)
This course offers entering 9th graders an opportunity to learn valuable researching skills that they will need throughout their high school career. The activities include: learning the proper format for an I-Search paper, activating prior knowledge, collecting research, conducting an interview, reflecting on what was learned and creating a list of references.
Moreover, the I-Search paper is not a traditional research paper because it encourages the student to find something that they are interested in exploring (instead of having the topic prescribed to them). As a result students must probe their own understanding, develop their own questions and collect research that answers these questions.
In addition to learning proper research skills the students will analyze several articles to learn how to find the main idea of a piece of writing and then summarize these points in their own words.
Students will also participate in group presentations
where they will share their work with fellow classmates and even perform a
skit that addresses the various strengths that people from different
professions possess in order to solve a problem.
