VI. Overview (Course Description)

• This course offers entering 9^th graders an opportunity to learn valuable researching skills that they will need throughout their high school career.  The activities include: learning the proper format for an I-Search paper, activating prior knowledge, collecting research, conducting an interview, reflecting on what was learned and creating a list of references.

• Moreover, the I-Search paper is not a traditional research paper because it encourages the student to find something that they are interested in exploring (instead of having the topic prescribed to them).  As a result students must probe their own understanding, develop their own questions and collect research that answers these questions.

• In addition to learning proper research skills the students will analyze several articles to learn how to find the main idea of a piece of writing and then summarize these points in their own words.

• Students will also participate in group presentations where they will share their work with fellow classmates and even perform a skit that addresses the various strengths that people from different professions possess in order to solve a problem.
