MASTER Gets a Facelift

Nasa symbolAs a result of a change in funding the MASTER program has changed its focus and is concentrating on a special three-year science curriculum written by NASA. The areas of concentration this summer will be Physical Climate and Earth Systems. In addition, our Masterites will use computer technology, by combining Internet access with various applications to arrive at pertinent conclusions.

It is the hope of the Director of the program, Dr. Anne Rothstein, and the Curriculum Specialist, Dr. Daniel Broe that our fledgling scientists might be able to begin planning for a future Westinghouse Project with the information and skills they acquire this summer.

Both coordinators, Ms. Grossberg, and Ms. Stark are very excited about this new direction and hope that our young scientists find the change both challenging and exciting.

A major benefit of the new grant will be the that funds are available to pay the fees for MACY seniors to take college-level courses in the fall semester. To avail themselves of this opportunity all MASTERITES took three CUNY assessment tests on the first day. Seniors passing all three tests will be eligible to register for a college course in the fall.

Ms. Stark and Ms. Grossberg want to especially thank Mr. David Fletcher for his time in administering the tests, scoring the results and eventually registering seniors for courses. He is a true friend to Clinton High School.

Underclassmen should use the results as a guide to which areas they may need to review in the future as they too will have this opportunity if they continue in the program.

Good luck to all MASTERITES as we begin our sixth summer at Lehman!

Academic Olympics Warmup

The sixth annual Academic Olympics will kick off on Thursday, July 11 in Room B-39 Masterites will spend this week preparing for their first competition in the following ways:

1. Selection of a team name
2. Selection of three teams of three to compete.
3. Perusal of the New York Times for current events information.
4. Review of all course work

It is important that all Masterites come in the correct attire, "Navy T-Shirts", ready to do academic combat. It is hoped that the group meeting time will be used each day to prepare for this exciting competition.

Our next issue will feature the team names and the scores after Round 1. Ms. Stark and Ms. Grossberg wish everybody, Good Luck! -- There are NO LOSERS IN MASTER!

New Faces

School is out and the NASA/MASTER Program at Lehman College has begun. We all know that in the summertime people are always outside getting fired-up from bathing in the sun and mingling amongst one another, making new friends; but no place is friendship more prevalent than at the MASTER program. This summer we have an array of new faces working with the program. People whose avocation ranges the whole gamut: from college professors to recent high school graduates. These are individuals who are funny, ambitious, helpful, and most of all; enjoy working with young adults.

To name a few of the good men and women that are lending a helping hand this summer; there are Mr. Li, Mrs. Frankel, Selamowit Gilagaber, and Nadia Bradshaw.

Computer & Books (graphic)Mr. Eugene Li is one of the four teachers involved in the NASA/MASTER program this year. Mr. Li will teach the Internet course. Eugene Li has a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and is currently a graduate student at Lehman College. During the Academic Year Mr. Li teaches keyboarding and word processing at DeWitt Clinton High School. One of his reasons for getting involved in the NASA/MASTER program is that the work he will be doing this summer is a pilot for what he will encounter throughout the next academic year. His goal is to create a one-semester course in teaching the Internet to students at DeWitt Clinton HS. Eugene Li admits he has a personal interest in the Internet and computers which was the other reason why he wanted to work with the MASTER program.

Mrs. Bella Frankel is the other teacher working with computers. Mrs. Frankel is a retired teacher of 30 years with two Bachelors and two Master's degrees. She has a BS in Chemistry from Hunter College, and a BS in Computer Science from the CUNY Graduate Center. Mrs. Frankel's first MS is in Science Education from Hunter and her second MS is in Supervision, also from Hunter.

Although Mrs. Frankel is retired from the NYC Board of Education, she still works part-time. She got involved in this program because she enjoys working with both high school students and computers.

Mr. Book graphicSelamowit Gilagaber, one of the group leaders is a recent graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School. Selamowit was born and raised in Ethiopia and is an alumnus of the MASTER program. Selamowit will be attending Kenyon College in Ohio this fall. She is considering both Economics and Statistics as possible majors. Selamowit is happy to work with the MASTER program in order to give something back to her fellow classmates and former High School.

Nadia Bradshaw another group leader, is originally from Antigua a small island in the West Indies. This young lady has recently graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School as a Macy student. Nadia will be attending Smith College in the fall and plans to major in Mathematics and minor in Education. Nadia's ultimate goal is to become a Calculus professor. What a wonderful addition to the teaching profession she will be.
