MASTER and NASA Continue Succesful Partnership

As a result of a 3-year grant from NASA our MASTER Program is in the second year of a partnership with NASA. The emphasis continues to be Earth Systems. This summer the MASTERITES will be exposed to courses in: Earth Systems, Environment, Engineering, and the Use of the Internet.

NASAIt is the hope of the Director of the Program, Dr. Anne Rothstein that our fledgling scientists will be able to begin the steps necessary for future intensive research into areas relating to Earth Science.

As we begin our summer session, the Coordinators of the program -- Ms. McCabe, Ms. Stark, and Guidance Counselor Ms. Grossberg hope that all MASTERITES will find the course work challenging and exciting.

Once again the program will include an Academic Olympic competition at the close of each week. Ms. Stark is all geared up to challenge students with her very elusive Current Events questions -- No one knows what she will ask???

Ms. McCabe wants to remind all MASTERITES that they are expected to complete all course work satisfactorily, attend classes daily and on time, and participate in all activities in order to receive a stipend at the conclusion of the program. She also wanted to reiterate how proud all coordinators are of MASTERITES as they prefer to spend a portion of their summer vacation in academic pursuits.

Academic Olympics Warmup

The seventh annual Academic Olympics will kick off on Thursday, July 3 in Room B-39 MASTERITES will spend this week preparing for their first competition in the following ways:

1. Selection of a team name;
2. Selection of three teams of three to compete;
3. Perusal of the New York Times for current events information;
4. Review of all course work.

It is important that all Masterites come in the correct attire, "Grey T-Shirts", ready to do academic combat. It is hoped that each group takes time each day to prepare for this exciting competition.

Ms. McCabe, Ms. Stark and Ms. Grossberg wish everybody, Good Luck! -- There are NO LOSERS IN MASTER!

Our teams this year are as follows:

Group A The Annihilators Mr. Haglund
Victor
Group B The Bombers Mr. Chessler

Group C "Astro Kim"
Gold Star
Ms. Ahern
Catherine
Group D The "X's" Mr. Byrne

Master of the Universe Returns

After a two-year leave, the "MASTER of the Universe" returns to head this year's NASA/MASTER Summer Program. Ms. Phyllis McCabe who was on loan to the Educational Reform Company "Ventures in Education" decided to return to head the MACY Program at Clinton H.S. and the MASTER Program at Lehman College.

Ms. Stark and Ms. Grossberg, who filled in for Ms. McCabe for the past two years are very glad to see her return. Ms. Stark says "She is a dynamic, caring, motivated and excellent educator." She expects perfection and demands that students perform up to their potential.

Ms. McCabe was responsible for creating the MACY Program and under her tutelage the program gained national recognition. She is extremely proud of this summer's participants and looks forward to working closely with them in the fall.

We welcome her back to Clinton HS and to Lehman College and we know that all MASTERITES will make sure that Ms. McCabe continues to be glad she traded private industry for public education.

New Faces

School is out and the NASA/MASTER Program at Lehman College has begun. We all know that in the summertime people are always outside getting fired-up from bathing in the sun and mingling amongst one another, making new friends; but no place is friendship more prevalent than at the MASTER program. This summer we have an array of new faces working with the program. These are individuals who are funny, ambitious, helpful, and most of all; enjoy working with young adults.

To name a few of the good men and women that are lending a helping hand this summer; there are Mr. Chessler, Mr. Byrne, and Mr. Haglund.

Mr. Michael Chessler attended Grinnell University in Iowa majoring in Classics. He received his Master's Degree in Teaching from Adelphi University. At Clinton HS, Mr. Chessler wears many hats: MACY College Advisor, E.S.L. teacher, and SAT tutor. When not working, he enjoys baseball, basketball, and fishing. He also enjoys listening to opera. The main reason for his participation in MASTER/NASA is to get to know students outside the traditional school environment. This would help him as he prepares students for entrance into college. We welcome Mr. Chessler as the Internet teacher to the program.

Mr. Thomas Byrne, a new instructor in the MASTER Program is a graduate of Yale University with a major in History. He received his J.D. Degree in Law from Stanford and practiced civil litigation for fifteen years prior to becoming an Earth Science teacher. Mr. Byrne, a father of four, enjoys camping and canoeing as well as coaching baseball. When questioned as to why he wanted to teach in the MASTER Program, Mr. Byrne replied "I am glad to be provided with an opportunity to teach a subject I enjoyed to good high school students who want to learn." We welcome him to the program.

Technology Teacher of the YearMr. Robert Haglund is a graduate of New York University with additional graduate work at Hofstra and Lehman College. He has been an educator for 32 years, 16 of which were spent at DeWitt Clinton High School. During the school year Mr. Haglund teaches technology with an emphasis on Design, Problem Solving, and Principals of Engineering. He believes that the MASTER Program is an interesting project and that problem solving skills are important for young minds. He is also the New York City Technology Association's Teacher of the Year for 1997!
