Academic Olympics Kickoff

The kickoff for the 10th annual Academic Olympics on Friday, July 6, 2001 was exciting and controversial. All teams came well prepared and ready to compete on both subject matter and current events. Mr. Byrne’s and Mr. Chessler’s arch-rivalry continues from previous years. Mr. Byrne’s team in 2 out of 3 previous years has lost in the final round to Mr. Chessler’s team.

Byrne
Mr. Byrne couldn’t resist amplifying his voice with the voice transmitter his group built.

The highlight of this past week’s competition was the disagreement between Mr. Ginter and Mr. Byrne over the definition of a vector. MASTERites also joined in the heated discussion.

Later in the competition, Mr. Ginter and Mr. Byrne again enjoyed a spirited discussion regarding the quality of Mr. Byrne’s questions. Mr. Ginter referred to one of Mr. Byrne’s questions as a "mean question."

Albert Ramirez (group B) amazed the audience with the speed at which he delivered complicated answers.

Ms. McCabe reminded the group that three weeks of competition remain and anything can happen.

Who are the Group Leaders? Our Group Leaders have a very demanding job. They must keep their groups on task and encourage them to learn as much as possible.

All of them are veterans of the spring and summer NASA/MASTER Programs. We congratulate them on doing a fine job.

Group Leaders

Aissata, Usha, John, Spenser, Nathifa
Yolaimel

Spenser Osei, who will be attending Northeastern University in Massachusetts, plans on majoring in Biology. After finishing his undergraduate studies at Northeastern, he hopes to attend medical school with a specialization in urology.

Nathifa Fearon will be attending New York University in the fall. She will major in nursing and plans on becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner. She will work with junior high school students in the Fieldston enrichment program after the completion of the NASA/MASTER Program.

John Ramirez, who will be attending Yale University in the fall, plans on majoring in political science. He wants to go to Law School and become a lawyer. Politics happens to be John’s forté. Later in his life he hopes to become a politician.

Yolaimel Mendez will attend Pace University in Pleasantville, New York this fall. She plans on relaxing before the four hard years begin. She plans on majoring in chemistry, but leaves other options open.

Usha Mahabir, who will attend Rutgers University this fall, also plans on entering a pre-med program with a major in biology. After the MASTER Program this summer, she plans on moving to New Jersey to make a smooth transition into college. She is going to miss everybody, and hopes to be back next year.

Aissata Diaby will be a senior at DeWitt Clinton High School in September. She is going to be busy for the rest of the summer studying for her 3 Advanced Placement courses (AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, and AP English Literature). Aissata is a veteran of the NASA/MASTER Program.

"NASA DAILY" Posts Winners

This week’s winners are:

  • Adnan Rosario (Group D)
  • Munesh Ramnarine (Group A)
  • Terry Ann Harding (Group C)

Can this be school?

Group B and C have spent the last two weeks getting an introduction to Newtonian Physics and Quantum Mechanics. Mr. Ginter has an unusual way of doing this. The groups were taught these principles through the process of building photo-electric cars, rockets, and kites. They demonstrated how much they learned when they tested their creations.
