NASA/MASTER We're Back!

NASA symbolIf it’s July, it is time for the NASA/MASTER Program. On July 1, the program began its eleventh summer. The popularity of the program led to the closing of registration by mid-May. Eighty-nine lucky students are participating in four classes for fifteen days.

Teachers

Ms. Rivas, Mr. Chessler, Ms. Colon and Ms. Roman

Once again, Mr. Chessler returns. This summer his class is focusing on web-page design using "Dream Weaver" software. Ms. Rivas’s class is dissecting fetal pigs, sheep hearts and brains. Ms. Colon’s class is engaged in learning the basics of fingerprinting, hair, fabric, document, blood, urine and ink analysis. Next week they will use these investigative skills to solve crimes. Ms. Roman’s class is learning physics through the building of hot air balloons, which they will attempt to fly. Planes will also be built and stress tests will be performed on the wings.

We’ll keep you informed of the progress of our scientists, engineers, detectives and web-page designers in future newsletters.

The eleventh annual Academic Olympics will kick off on Wednesday, July 3rd, in Room B-08. MASTERITES have spent this week preparing for their first competition in the following ways:

  1. Selection of a team name;
  2. Selection of teams of three to compete;
  3. Perusal of the New York Times for current events information;
  4. Review of all course work.

It is important that all MASTERITES come in the correct attire, "Gray T-Shirts," ready to do academic combat. It is hoped that each group takes time each day to prepare for this exciting competition.

Return of the Graduate

Usha-John

Usha Mahabir and John Ramirez

They’re back!! John Ramirez and Usha Mahabir, graduates of the DeWitt Clinton MACY Program, have returned to work with the NASA/MASTER Program. John, a June 2001 graduate, attends Yale University as a Political Science major. He was surprised at the friendliness of the Yale students and he is looking forward to September. Usha, also a June 2001 graduate, is a psychology major at City College. Usha has the honor of being on the Dean’s list both semesters of her freshman year.

Ms. McCabe is very pleased that they are back because they are familiar with the NASA/MASTER Program and are a big help.

The competition has begun in which students are to answer selected questions from the SAT, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). In order to win, students must answer the most questions correctly in the shortest amount of time. In addition, teams are awarded points at the Academic Olympics for every "NASA Daily" winner during the week.

Papers are collected. NASA/MASTER teachers review test items. Moans and groans and yeahs echo through the classroom.

Tomorrow there will be more winners! This week’s winner are:

Where's Luis?

Luis Rohena

Luis Rohena

Luis Rohena is gone but not forgotten. Luis, a June 2000 graduate of the DeWitt Clinton MACY Program, was Ms. McCabe’s assistant for 2 summers. But this summer Luis had an exceptional opportunity to participate in a pre-med research program at Columbia University. Luis wants to be an oncologist and this program will allow him to study with world-class professors and doctors. We are proud of Luis! We miss you Luis!
