Round two of the MASTER/NASA Academic Olympics revealed that all teams were better prepared. The point spread from the 1st place team to the last place team was a very narrow 70 points. Mr. Chesslers team remains in last place, but they are not to be underestimated, as they accumulated the most points in this weeks competition. Ms. Colons team is holding on to 1st place by only 30 points.
Remember Mr. Byrne from previous MASTER/NASA summer programs? He held the record for the longest, most complicated questions. Well, Ms. Nancy Roman is taking his place. Students would be wise to take notes when she asks her questions.
Ms. Colon receives the award for the most creative question, which required the competitors to observe the teachers as they stood at the front of the room. Her question reminded all that forensic scientists must be careful observers.
Amanda Rivera (Group B) successfully challenged an answer from Group A. As a result her team received extra points. Good work, Amanda!
At this point, it is anyones competition to win. The doubling of points in the final match will make the contest especially interesting.

Our final day of MASTER/NASA 2002 will take place on Thursday, July 25, 2002. The
schedule for our last day is:

MASTERITES are reminded that successful completion of all course work and a copy of the Social Security card are necessary if a stipend is to be awarded.
Prizes for the Academic Olympics will be awarded at the luncheon. Ms. McCabe hopes all MASTERITES are now more confident that they can be successful in challenging math and science courses. A critical element of success is perseverance. For students, this was especially true in Ms. Romans Design and Physics class, in which students experienced much frustration in the design of the Fan Car.

Deniece Nunez - Deniece has spent all of her high school summers in the NASA/MASTER Program. Being a group leader has allowed her to experience the program from a different perspective. "I can enjoy the program without pressure. I like the role of motivating the kids."
This September, Deniece is off to Brown University. Her major is still undecided.
Colleen White-Colleen is also a veteran of three summers with the NASA/MASTER Program. Colleen stated that her group is very hard working and intelligent.
Colleen will be a freshman at Connecticut College. Her interests are Physics and Engineering.
Jency Thermadan-Jency, experiencing her third year with the program, stated, "The Master program combines learning and fun in a hands-on environment." This fall, Jency will begin college at Pace University where she will major in accounting.
Aissata Diaby-Aissata has been a participant in the NASA/MASTER Program for three years. This year she is a group leader. She feels that the Master Program is wonderful because it allows students to do activities that they wouldnt ordinarily do in a high school setting.
In September she leaves for Vassar College, where she will major in Bio-Chemistry and minor in computer science.
