STEP/MASTER

We’re back! And what a summer of learning and fun it will be. Once again the popularity of the program led to the early closing of registration.

Michael Chessler and Miriam Rivas

Mr. Chessler, whose group won the Academic Olympics the past two years, is focusing on a virtual enterprise activity this summer. Students will design and market a game based on super heros. Ms. Rivas, senior faculty member in the program, is leading the students in the dissection of rats and sharks.

Phyllis McCabe and Zoraida Colón

Ms. Colón’s students are crime scene investigators. They are learning the basics of forensic science. Our detectives are assigned some interesting cases: Flowers for Freddy, Caught by a Kiss, and The Deadly Picnic.

Eugene Ginter

Mr. Ginter, after an absence of one year, is once again exposing our students to the wonders of physics. His students are doing experiments with model fuel cell cars, the prototype cars of the future. They are learning the principles of energy form conversion from one to another. Masterites are getting a head start in preparing for the Physics Regents.

  Academic Olympics Warmup

The twelfth annual Academic Olympics will kick off on Wednesday, July 3rd, in Room B-04. MASTERITES have spent this week preparing for their first competition in the following ways:

  1. Selecting a team name;
  2. Selecting teams of three to compete;
  3. Perusing of the New York Times for current events information;
  4. Reviewing all course work.

It is important that all MASTERITES come in the correct attire, "Blue T-Shirts," ready to do academic combat. It is hoped that each group takes time each day to prepare for this exciting competition.

Ms. McCabe wishes everybody Good Luck! -- There are NO LOSERS IN MASTER!

Important Reminders

Luis Rohena

What a surprise when Luis Rohena, a July 2000 Macy Program graduate, called to say he was able to return to the MASTER Program. We are avid "Luis Watchers." Last summer we missed him as he was participating in a pre-med research program at Columbia University. This fall, he will enter his senior year at Columbia. He has already taken his Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and he scored at the 97th percentile. He will apply to Harvard Medical, Yale Medical, and Columbia Medical. Stay tuned!

"MASTER DAILY" Posts Winner

It’s 10:00 a.m. All activity ceases. Quiz papers are distributed face down. The signal is given. Students answer questions selected from the SAT, Graduate Record Exam (GRE), and the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). In order to win, students must answer the most questions correctly in the shortest amount of time.

Students hand in papers. Teachers review test items. Students, listen carefully! Could some of these test items be repeated in the Academic Olympics?

This week’s winners are:

Amanda Rivera-Group B

I just graduated from the MACY Program at DeWitt Clinton High School, which is no easy accomplishment. The hours of work

Amanda Rivera

were tedious and the college application process was overwhelming, but it all worked out for the best. I graduated from Clinton with a GPA of 94 and I will attend Barnard College this fall.

If there is anything I want people to know about me, it’s that I’m cheerful, silly, and I hold people in very high esteem. I also play the violin, though not as well as I’d like, and I am a huge Harry Potter fan.

I’m thrilled to be with the MASTER Program a second year (this time as a group leader). It’s a great program that allows students to learn in ways not possible in a high school setting, and I’m glad to help out in anyway possible.

Phyllis McCabe models the misprinted shirt.

The color is a beautiful blue. The red and white letters stand out. One letter really catches your attention. It is the extra "a" in "reasearch." Oops!

Who did it? The manufacturer. The shirts have been returned. New shirts will be arriving soon. By the way, what is an ampersand?
