"OLD TIMERS" SURPRISED

Mr. Chessler, the reigning champ, and Bubonic Plague are in third place, at least until this Thursday’s competition. Mr. Chessler is not comfortable out of 1st place.

Ms. Rivas’ group, "BX Finest," which is now in 1st place, will "study hard, stay focused, and not let winning go to our heads" according to Jenson Thermadam. Kayla Watson stated, "I am taking a lot of notes."

Josué Cofresi has motivated the Conquistadores to be better prepared by reading The New York Times on line.

Nina Ibanez has "D Block" preparing summaries of the news.

The only challenge during the competition was made by Bakary Diaby.

Will all of the strategies pay off? Stay tuned!

Josué Cofresi - Group C

Josué Cofresi

For those of you who are wondering, my name is pronounced "Ho-Sway" not "Joe-Sue" (only special friends can call me that). I recently graduated from the Macy Program at DeWitt Clinton High School with a 95 average and I’m both excited and nervous about attending Brown University this fall. I’m proud to state that this is my fourth year participating in the MASTER Program. This time, however, I finally have the opportunity to play the role of "leader." As a reserved person, I felt a little uneasiness with this job. Yet, as I spend another fun week here at Lehman College, all of my previous worries have gone away.

As a group that gels well, all of us in Group C can approach each other with great ease.

Good luck, Conquistadores.

Do you know:

Did You Know?

...A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes.

...The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket.

...It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open.

...Asthma and diet are related. Pre-school children who drink whole milk and eat butter have a better chance of being asthma free. But, the drawback is that a diet high in saturated fat increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

"Vital Signs" by Eric Nagourney, The New York Times, July 8, 2003 Section F, pg. F6.

Aissata Diaby

Phyllis McCabe & Aissata Diaby

My name is Aissata Diaby. I graduated from the Macy Program at DeWitt Clinton High School in 2002 and I will begin my sophomore year at Vassar College this fall. I plan on majoring in biochemistry and minor in computer science and either French or mathematics.

I was part of the MASTER Program for four years. The research process that I practiced in the MASTER Program helped me be a better student in my college chemistry lab.

As a MASTER Program veteran, I wish all of the groups the best of luck in the competitions.
