| Leader of the "Bling" |
The kickoff competition revealed that the four competing groups have a lot of energy. Ms. Colón’s group "The Lords of the Bling..." came dressed in crowns and wore plastic jewelry. They outshone all the other groups in more ways than one.
But then a big surprise! On Monday, July 11, Ms. Colón sent a message to Ms. McCabe stating that she had asked a question that Group C, The Fantastic C’s, answered incorrectly and then lost 50 points. Ms. Colón informed Ms. McCabe, MASTER of the Universe, that she had not completely covered this information in class and therefore Group C should not be penalized. So Group C’s score increased from 90 to 140.
If last week is any indication of the future, this week’s competition will be noisy and contentious. Ms. McCabe pointed out to the MASTERITES that in most of the previous competitions, the team leading in Round 3 was not able to sustain that lead in the final round. Stay tuned.

Rafael Balaguer |
Hey all you great people reading this now, it’s me, Rafael Balaguer, leader of Group D. I’ve been a Lord of the Bling for about two weeks now and I must admit I’m having a blast. Wearing 14-karat gold crowns and 3-pound diamond rings at competitions never gets old.
At the end of this summer I will be packing up all of my stuff and my bling to go to Babson College, which is a few miles from Boston. It’s an amazing business school and I can’t wait to get started. I’m going to major in marketing with hopes of having an office in the clouds on Madison Avenue, and being of some importance to the advertising world some day. Sure, I’ll have countless sleepless nights, boring professors, and perhaps a roommate who throws up every Friday night, but it’s those very things that will add to my college experience.
When I’m not at MASTER, I enjoy long walks on the beach, cuddling by the fire, and crocheting quilts for newborn babies. As much fun as it was to write that last sentence, I must return to the truth now. I am actually what many refer to as a "rail junky." I am obsessed with roller coasters (all hail Kingda Ka). I design them, memorize track layouts, and ride them every chance I get. Listening and watching anything Britney Spears is also another one of my favorite pastimes. "We" are expecting our twins in mid-September and can barely wait for their arrival. I also love to travel, swim, and, most importantly, take pictures. Photography is one of my all time favorite things to do and over the years I have become pretty good at it. You guys can check out some of my most recent work on my Sconex account.Well, now that you know a little, don’t be afraid to say "hi," when you see me around. Don’t worry, I won’t bite... hard.

Highlights of the last 2 weeks:
"Robotics
is great. I love learning something new." Vanessa Santora (C)
"You see a rat in the street and you don’t understand how complex they are." Shishona Jones (A)
"Usually I don’t like dissection because I am an animal activist. But I loved dissecting the shark. We found shrimp, horseshoes, and sea horses in its stomach. One shark had eaten a pregnant fish. So, we dissected it also." Katherine Mateo (D)

What a story this skull can tell. |
"When we solved the ‘Terror in Paradise’ crime, I felt good because I felt like I could fight terrorists." Shantel Powell (D)
"Forensics is great! Ms. Colón introduced a lot of new techniques in the forensic class." Fernando Gomez (D)
"I learned a lot about computers that I didn’t know. I did research about the flying car. What I’m doing in Mr. Chessler’s class connects with real life." Yarleiny Terrero (B)
"I am proud that my breath recovery results in Ms. Roman’s class are very good." Abigail Boateng (A)
