The kickoff competition revealed that the four competing groups have a lot of energy. The MASTER senior teachers, Ms. Roman and Ms. Colón, have never experienced a winning group. They entered Round 1 with much optimism.
But at the conclusion of this round, Ms. Colón’s team, Bam!Bam!Bam!, sizzled and fell to tie for last place with Mr. DiGaetano’s Dynamites. Mr. DiGaetano was not pleased. Mr. Stern’s group, Vindictive, easily took first place.

This year at the MASTER program we have a new teacher, Vincent DiGaetano, teaching Movie Making. He also teaches at DeWitt Clinton High School, where he has taught Virtual Enterprise for three years. Virtual Enterprise is a business class in which students participate in business and advertisement competitions. Everything in that class is virtual: virtual products and virtual bank accounts.
This summer he is teaching students how to make movies. Students are grouped together to make movies that interest them. Many of the movies are horror-related. According to Mr. DiGaetano, "Students learn technical skills, learn to work within a deadline, and acquire a sense of urgency that projects need to be completed by a certain time." Students produce, direct, and edit movies in Windows Movie Maker. He encourages them to always plan ahead, to always make sure everything is done on time, and to always work within your means.
Mr. DiGaetano is excited to be here this summer and although his group had a rough start at -150 in the Academic Olympics, he says that "we just have to figure out how the game works."
So let’s give it up for Mr. DiGaetano and his group, the Dynamites!
