Math And Science Throiugh Excellence & Research

Vol. XVI, Issue 3
July 25, 2006

Round 2 of the competition produced some surprises. Students challenged more questions, but no challenges were sustained. Group D applauded when they moved from negative 150 to 0.

New York Times questions consistently challenged most groups. Group leaders need to re-think strategy for this segment of the competition.

The standings after round 2 remained almost the same except that Group B and D are no longer tied for last place.

Last place belongs to group B - at least for now.

Ms. McCabe reminded all that the competition has two more weeks and that a SURPRISE will be introduced in week 3 that will impact the competition.

Shantae Barrett

Hello, my name is Shantae Barrett, and this is my second summer working in the MASTER program. An alumna of DeWitt Clinton, I attended this program throughout my high school career and it feels good to be working "behind the scenes." I will be entering my sophomore year at Lehman College this fall semester. In keeping with the fashion of my peers, it is highly probable that I will be an English major and seek my doctorate. My advice to all of you is to pursue a career in what you love and learn humility. There will be people in this world who you can teach and others from whom you can learn. Do not let youthful arrogance blind you from this fact. Lastly, I wish you all the very best in all of your future endeavors.

What is a rebus??

A rebus is a picture that incorporates letters and words that represent another word or phrase or saying. This past week timed competitions were held. Group leaders and teachers planned strategy but were not allowed to assist with the answers.

Prize: 50 pts for each win, added to the final score in the Academic Olympics

Group A won 2 rebus competitions - for a total of 100 points for the Academic Olympics. This is the surprise that Ms. McCabe referred to in round two of the Academic Olympics.

Which student in Group A got GLOOP in her hair?

Teachers

Howard Stern

This summer, we have a new teacher, Howard Stern, teaching Fly & Drive. He has taught mathematics at De Witt Clinton High School for two years. In the MASTER program, however, he is providing students an introduction of forces in physics and aerodynamics. A majority of the experiments involve gravity and its influence on modes of transportation. The students enjoy building bridges, air cars, and rockets in this fast-paced class. During the course of building their bridges, the students also learn how to operate a business and work within a budget, being mindful of the building code.

Mr. Stern would like to remind the students that the MASTER program is "a real opportunity in an informal environment to do some explorations not possible in school," and it prepares them for college by teaching them time management.

His advice for his team, Group C - Vindictive is to "be calm" and not let the pressure of answering in the competition get to them.
