Vol. XVI, Issue 4
August 1, 2006

By the time you read this, the MASTER Program will have ended and the final scores for the Academic Olympics will be in. Congratulations to the winning team and to all MASTERITES for a successful program.

In reading students’ comments on the Academic Olympics, it is obvious that this was an enjoyable experience, but, most importantly, students learned to read the news, pay attention to detail, react under stress, and work together as a team.

Be safe and have a good summer. See you in September!

Samantha Rivera

My name is Samantha Rivera and I was born and raised in the Bronx. I graduated from DeWitt Clinton this year and I am definitely looking forward to college. Next month, I am leaving the "Big City" to go to SUNY Oswego. I am considering Biology or Biochemistry as a major. For the first time in my life, I will be far away from home and on my own. I will also be able to make important decisions by myself. It feels good to know that I am becoming an adult.

I have really enjoyed working for the MASTER program. What is better than meeting new people and having fun doing it? I work with a great group, the Vindictives, and I have the utmost confidence in my team. With three straight wins, I know we will be receiving those backpacks. My advice to the other teams: Look out!

Teachers

Ms. Colón and Ms. Roman

Ms. Zoraida Colon and Nancy Roman have both taught in the MASTER Program for approximately four summers. Ms. Colon previously taught the Forensic Science course and currently teaches Consumer Chemistry. Ms. Roman, for students who can remember that far back, previously taught the Fly and Drive course. For the past few summers, however, Ms. Roman has been giving students a look at the internal structures of different organisms through dissections in her Biological Investigations course.

In Consumer Chemistry, students are testing various products such as sunscreen, aspirin, antacid, whitening toothpaste, and clarifying shampoo for their effectiveness. Ms. Colon introduced the students to the wonderful world of tie-dye and slime, which deal with mordant fixing and polymerization, respectfully. They were also given lessons in "kitchen chemistry," experiments that can be done at home like the preparation of ice cream or the testing of the absorbency of deflocculates (sodium polyacrylates)—commonly known as diaper powder. Ms. Colon’s advice to all MASTERITES is to "study hard, but don’t forget to have fun sometimes" and to "set [their] expectations high and [they] will achieve them." She would also like to remind her group, team B- Bam! Bam! Bam! , that "teamwork wins in the long run."

In Ms. Roman’s course, Biological Investigations, students are dissecting owl pellets and fetal pigs. Additionally, they are determining the concentration of carbohydrates, vitamin C, proteins, and fats in different foods by monitoring the assimilation of these nutrients during digestion. Her advice to all Masterites is to "follow directions [to prevent] mistakes" and to "never give up because the sky is the limit." To her ‘Aces’: "Take it one step at a time and do the best that you can."
