Overview of STEP Curriculum Module-Summer 2005

V. Purposes (Course Objectives):

During the month of July 2005 students will: 

1.      Gain an understanding of the fundamentals of gears which will include the following:

i.      The Law of the Worm
ii.      Types of gears
iii.      Functions of each type of gear
iv.      Calculating gear ratios
v.      Advantages of gear teeth 

2.      Learn basic programming using Robolab in order to do the following:

 i.      Understand the icon-based language
ii.      Name and describe the icons and their functions
iii.      Program robots that they have been created using the Lego Mindstorm Kits 

3.      Utilize the Mindstorm manual to build, modify and design robots that will perform various functions including the following:

i.      Move in different directions for specific periods of time
ii.      Receive input from a touch sensor and respond based on the programming instructions
iii.      Pickup, hold, and release small objects
iv.      Retrieve small objects and return them to a marked area
v.      Perform tasks without disassembling
