Overview of STEP Curriculum Module-Summer 2004

V. Purposes (Course Objectives):

During the month of July 2004 students will learn the fundamentals of Newtonian Mechanics which will include the following:

  1. Newton's three laws.
  2. Application of Newton's second law in problem form.
  3. Introduction of momentum as well as solutions to basic problems.
  4. The laws of conservation of Energy, Momentum and Charge.
  5. Basic particle physics.
  6. An overview of nuclear energy.

Using a laptop computer, students shall be taught basic programming. They will program and build a robot using the "Lego Mind Storm" kit. This robot will be required to perform several different functions such as:

  1. Travel a straight line course.
  2. Retrieve small objects and return them to the starting point.
  3. Using a light sensor the robot shall travel between a light and dark path.
  4. The robot will be programmed to climb an obstacle course.
  5. Finally the robot will be tested as to how well it can survive a crash.
