The World According to Sophomores

EDITOR’S NOTE: We visited a high-school psychology class and asked a sampling of sophomore high-school students what it means when people tell you to "just be yourself." The talk quickly moved to "fitting in." Here are some of the students’ thoughts.

When somebody says "just be yourself," it means that you don’t have to act differently around people just to fit in. You don’t have to act like something you’re not, because being yourself is more than enough. "Fitting in" means you try to put yourself in a place or you try to be someone you’re not.

– Gertrudis Centeno

When somebody says ‘’just be yourself,‘’ it means to make your own decisions–ones that are not influenced by external forces such as parents, teachers, friends, etc., but express your own thoughts and beliefs. "Fitting in" means being able to assimilate into a group of people. You can do this by emulating characteristics of that specific group.

– Marcos Dominguez

I think the words "just be yourself" mean that you should do all the things you would normally do ... "fitting in" means kind of like when you want the approval of certain people, you act like them.

– Elizabeth Pellecier

"Just be yourself" means to act, dress, and say what you want or what makes you feel comfortable …" fitting in" means getting along with those around you.

– Luis Gomez

"Being yourself" means that you should stick to your personal qualities and that you should avoid outside influences. "Fitting in" means you get along with everyone else in your circle of unity. You "fit in" by being a follower. It’s bad, yes, it is, really.

– Joel R. Jimenez

When somebody says ‘’just be yourself,’’ that means that you should stay true to yourself. Don’t try to be like someone else–just be how you feel in your heart you should be … "fitting in" means that you are able to be in a certain crowd because everyone in that crowd shares similarities, whether it is because of your background or the way you dress, talk, think, or act. I fit in by choosing friends who I know won’t resent me because I may have certain differences from them.

– Alicia Lee

When somebody says ‘’just be yourself,’’ that means that you should do what you want to do and be what you want to be on your own terms and not follow others .You need to follow your own instincts. "Fitting in"’ means to try to blend in with everyone else. For example, if someone is hanging out with friends who drink, and that person doesn’t drink, and that person wants to fit in, that person may start drinking so he or she can fit in with the group and won’t seem like an oddball.

– Aria Francis

To me "being yourself" means not worrying about what offer people are doing or saying and just being who you really are at home, to not change the way you are for people just to have them like you. "Fitting in" does make it hard to be yourself because you want people to like you. You wouldn’t want them to talk behind your back.

– Yovanka Perez

I think "being yourself" means when you just act the way you are, meaning, like, don’t change for anyone …yes, it’s always easy for me to be myself because many people I hang out with are as crazy as me, and others accept me as being crazy because they might enjoy the laughs!

– Naiomi Bruno

I think "being yourself" means that you shouldn’t try to be someone else. Act like yourself and don’t be forced by external people … "fitting in" means putting on an act and drawing attention; you do this by trying to do what other people do.

– Lalita Itawaru

When somebody says ‘’just be yourself,‘’ it means to be who you are and that you shouldn’t change your personality just to fit in. Respect yourself. ’’Fitting in’’ means to do something or act in a way you would not normally do just to be in a group.

– Daniella Junor

"Just be yourself "means to be "who you are," the person who you’ve grown to be and the person you’re not afraid to be around anyone. "Fitting in" means to me that you try to be a person you’re not, just so others could accept you.

– Stephanie Arroyo

To me, "just be yourself" means to do what I know and to make the best decisions possible. "Fitting in" means to be with a group of people. I fit in by being myself.

– Matthew Maysonet

When They Appear and Disappear

by Keila Fortuna

Love is a feeling you get when that
special person arrives.

When you love someone you
often forget everything. You forget
that you have friends, that you
have a family, and that you have
more to live for. But then when
things get bad you feel that
everything collapses and there
is nothing you or anyone can
do. When that special person
leaves you, you feel like
the whole world is against you
and its like you’re dead but
you’re still alive.

A Black Rose

by Kendra Edwards

 A Black Rose
Has more thorns than a Red one
A Black Rose
Hurts more than a Red one.

My favorite color is black now.
I remember when you stab my back.
There was a rash in my heart
For a love that won’t come back.

I wish you could fall in love with me.
But who am I to play as God?
I’m just a lover who fell in love with you.
You’re the reason I can’t fall in love.

I don’t think

By Jose Disla

I don’t think you will
ever fully understand how
you’ve touched my life
and made me who I am.

I don’t think you could ever know
just how truly special you are
that even on the darkest nights
you are my brightest star.

I don’t think you will ever fully
understand how you made my dreams
come true or how you’ve opened
my heart to love.

You’ve allowed me to feel
something very hard to find
unconditional love that exists
in my body, soul, and mind.

I don’t think you could ever feel
all the love I have to give
and I am sure you’ll never realize
you’ve been my reason to live.

You are an amazing person
and without you I don’t know
where I’d be. Having you in my life
completes and fulfills every part of me.

I love you baby. . . .

What Am I Goin’ To Do Now That You’re Gone

by Danielle Ferguson

What am I goin’ to do now that you’re gone? Who will be my big bro? Who will protect me? What am I goin’ to do without you? I don’t know.

What am I going to do now that you’re gone? A big piece of my heart is missing. It can never be filled again ‘cause you’re my only brother. Now I know that Kesean, Tacuma, and the rest of your people have my back but it’s not the same without you here.

What am I goin’ to do now that you’re gone? Parkchester seems empty, lifeless even. My friends are doing a good job to keep me happy on the outside. But on the inside I really want to break down and cry until I can’t cry anymore. I know it won’t bring you back, but I’ll feel a lot better.

What am I goin’ to do now that you’re gone? It feels weird knowing that I’m not going to be seeing you around anymore. I guess that I have to deal with that for the rest of my life. Now that you’re gone, I’ve really noticed how much I really love you and I know deep down you felt the same.

What am I goin’ to do now that you’re gone? It feels like one week went by but it was really one day. I can’t take it anymore. I’m going crazy without you here. Why did you leave me alone?

What am I goin’ to do now that you’re gone? I cry myself to sleep just thinkin’ about you and the good times that we had. Sometimes I cry out of nowhere. I just bust out in tears. At first I think that it’s just a bad dream that I can’t wake up from. I still think it is, but part of me knows now that it’s real. And knowing the truth really hurts.

What am I goin’ to do now that you’re gone? To be honest, I guess I have to move on. But to let you know, Mike, I never really will. You will always be my big brother no matter what. Forever you will live on through me. I won’t let anyone forget about you. You have my word on that. Forever it will be Mike and Danielle, brother and sister. For life. I’ll miss you a lot.

How Can I

by Yocasta Tareras

How can I touch you if I don’t have no hands
How can I see you if I am blind
How can I smell you if I can’t smell
How can I kiss you if I don’t have lips
How can I love you if I am not loved

A Poem In the Style of Shakespeare

by Christian Lucerno

This love feels brave
On your love I depend
Amazed by your beauty I am
A fool thou say to think I’m her man.

Lenity for my love
Even though I respect your decision
Be away you said far gone
I doom thee to death, you said.

Forbear to love
This love had been sped
I should say peppered
A little bit of magic should be spread.

A stain that has no cleanliness
This love is just a mess
I write to you everyday
I guess I hoped too much of fate.

Love

by Dorothea Ava Denise Young

 Do you ever find love
Is Love that Important
I mean love is nice and stuff
But some people think love is
a sign of happiness
I know you find your true love
in high school. But some say they
find true love in Junior High.

Love is the meaning of happiness but it
is also is the meaning of sadness
Because when someone says they love you
They wind up leaving you.

Some say all sixteen-year-old girls
are quick to say " I love you" to some guy
but they wind up pregnant by that
same guy and that guy says he doesn’t
want anything to do with her. Then she winds up
getting an abortion.
Now when someone say "I Love"
don’t say it back until you get to know them better.

Unless they’re family.

I would have never thought

by Arjulis Sosa

 I would have never thought
I would meet someone like you.
Someone who cares for me like u do
You came into my life when I needed you
the most
From then on we became so close
My feeling for you got so strong
I don’t know how we can ever go wrong
Baby you mean the world to me
And hopefully you do see
Of what I would have never thought
Came to be.

You’re Sent From God

By Raven Ruple

You’re sent from God
To take all my worries away.

You’re sent from God
To pick up all the pieces my heart may
throw away.

You’re sent from God
To tell me everything is okay.

So if you’re sent from God
Please don’t take your love away.

His Touch

by Chasidy Jiles

What is this I feel?
It’s unbelievably soft but sensual.
What is this I feel?
His arms wrapped around me tight.
What is this I feel?
Him breathing on my neck
Telling me sweet stories in my ear.
What is this I feel?
I feel me wanting him
I feel me longing for him
For his touch, his kiss, his feel.
What is this I feel?
Some say puppy love,
But all I can say is...
I feel!

Untitled Poem

by Miriam Amy Balaguer

I knew da relationship wuz a
mistake it wuz all a fake every-
one thought it would last now
its fadin’ to da past I had
treasure & I shared dat pleasure
you abused the attention I wuz
sending I’m not a bird from
da streets I’m nothing but sweet
u swept me off my feet I
thought da love to you wuz

wrong now its so gone dis day

they see a smile on my face
they think dat the style of my

empty sometimes I
feel like you pimped me I wuz
glad I wuz w/ you but I just
can’t stop thinking bout how blue
is my life without you

Friendship vs. love

by Christian Lucerno

My feelings are so confused and messed up
I am caught between friendship and love.

You’re my director so you get to say "cut"
I feel like quitting, but my heart tells me don’t
break down
I dream of one day seeing you in a
wedding gown.

I write so much about this love
But I still can’t tell you
I fear that if you find out
You’re gonna tell me "I’m your friend," so get away and get out.

"Damn," I think to myself
I never thought I would love writing
But if it helps me express my feelings
Then I’ll say "Damn people stop biting."

I guess I realized now
This ain’t love, it’s obsession
I guess this fear is far gone now
Let’s start our lives over, from
the friendship section.

Program Coordinator’s Note:

The Pre-Teaching Program is run in conjunction with Lehman College. In the Program, Junior students work alongside their own classroom teachers, learning the hows and whys of life on the other side of the desk. Many of the students also take a class at Lehman, where they earn three free college credits. But the Pre-Teaching Program isn’t just about teaching–far from it. In the process of Pre-Teaching, students learn to think on their feet, plan ahead, have confidence, and build critical life and career skills that are useful in any profession. Every student keeps a journal of day-to-day activities as part of the Program. Here is a sampling from Luis Mercedes’ Pre-Teaching journal. – Ms. Laura Tringali

Diary of a Pre-Teacher

by Luis Mercedes

February 10, 2005

Yesterday there was a Socratic seminar, in which the students gathered in a circle and discussed a topic among themselves. Ms. Mac and I evaluated the students on sheets. Today I handed out the sheets; the students’ objective was to identify ways of improvement. Afterwards, Ms. Mac told the students to get into groups of three and make their own gangs, the catch being that the gang couldn’t be affiliated with weapons, crime, violence, or hurting people. The point of this activity was to remove all ideas of gangs that the students could think of.

Ms. Mac went over a sheet that the class had done earlier. Ms. Mac gave me the responsibility of grading all the papers. This was actually my first time feeling like a teacher. Then the class continued to work on their projects on gangs. I helped a group come up with a slogan and a code name.

February 14, 2005

The class started off reading "The House on Mango Street." Ms. Mac then explained the way the narrator of the book described the way her family has different types of hair. Afterwards Ms. Mac gave an assignment asking the students to choose one physical feature in their family that is different, and then write as much as they could about that feature. I went around the classroom giving people ideas on what to write about, whether it was hair, nose, ears, eyes, or height.

February 15, 2005

I helped Ms. Mac grade quizzes and put them inside the students’ folders. She then discussed with me the mini-lesson I have to teach tomorrow. She gave me different ideas on what to include in my lesson. Ms. Mac suggested that I do a fun activity like play a game to make the lesson more interesting.

February 28, 2005

I watched as Ms. Mac passed out two different reviews of the film "Raising Victor Vargas." After she read both reviews, she asked for comments. I gave my opinion and said the review from Amazon was better. As the weeks have passed by, I have been getting more comfortable and settled with the teacher, students, and class overall. I have noticed that some students put a lot more effort into the work than others. This is something that has to be worked on.

March 3, 2005

Ms. Mac gave the students subject/verb and past/present assignments. Some already had the ear for what sounded right and others needed to know the rules. I had the responsibility of reading three pages from the novel "The House on Mango Street." I felt like I did a pretty good job, but I read a little too fast. She then gave the students an activity in which she asked the class who’s the weirdest person they know and what are some of the activities they do. I am really starting to like Ms. Mac as both a teacher and a person.

March 7, 2005

Today Ms. Mac gave an activity that focused on creativity. She gave out a couple of headlines. With the magazines and newspapers they had, the students were to choose a picture that related to the headlines. For example, one headline was "husband kills wife." I helped one group pick of picture of a Subway sandwich. They used this picture to say the husband poisoned the wife with the sandwich. I really enjoy these activities because they make the class fun and get everyone smiling and out of the boredom.

March 11, 2005

Today the class was doing an assignment on prefixes. Each group had a different prefix. The three prefixes were "inter," "ex," and "tele." They all seemed pretty comfortable presenting their prefixes. I actually learned what "excavation" meant, which is to dig up an old site. I also learned that the word "matic" deals with a system. "Ex" also has multiple meanings, such as former, out of, and the best or beyond.

March 14, 2005

I started the class off by reading a passage by Hilary Clinton. The students then had to answer questions based on the passage, which tested their listening skills. We then discussed great beginnings to books and movies. Afterwards, Ms. Mac gave the class an assignment in which they had to come up with beginnings for their stories. I really enjoyed the topics being discussed in this lesson.

March 16, 2005

Today the students were to do a T-chart with the stories they were writing. I went around checking up on people and their work. It was boring, because there were only eight people in class.

March 23, 2005

Today the students took the roles of their characters and went to the front of the room and sat in the "hot seat." The class had to ask the "characters" questions. Three students went up and answered questions in a very good manner. For every good question, a Jolly Rancher was given. I guess candy really makes students enthusiastic about the lesson!

April 6, 2005

Today we continued to read the book entitled "Holes." Ms. Mac split the class into groups and had them answer questions that tested their knowledge of corruption. I helped a group read. At first a couple of group members didn’t want to read, but when I read they felt like reading because I guess I made them feel comfortable. This made me feel great because I got them interested in an activity.

Comments from other Junior Class Pre-Teachers about Pre-Teaching and the college-credit-bearing Intro to Education Course (ESC 135)

"Pre-teaching has taught me how to help people and how to teach people, but most of all, it’s taught me to be patient."

Abdul K. Abdullah

"I have learned that teaching relates to many different careers. This has made me realize how important teachers are to us and how they contribute to our society."

Arleen Concepcion

"Since I have begun Pre-teaching, I really don’t think I have grown. I would prefer to say that I have expanded my mind with knowledge. I recognize myself becoming more of a young lady, and developing strategies that will allow me to excel in my future career."

Samantha Dolmo

"Communication is an important quality, and Pre-Teaching is all about communication. If you can’t communicate well, how can people trust you?"

Kendra Edwards

"I thought I should be a math teacher because I am brilliant at math but even better at teaching...until I started Pre-Teaching. Don’t get me wrong, I love math like I love my mother, but Pre-Teaching and ESC 135 made me realize that teaching is not what it seems like on the outside. It’s like that saying "everything that glitters is not gold." The amount of time a good, caring, and intelligent teacher has to make for his or her students is just too much. I don’t want to be a math teacher anymore, but I am going further with my math. In college I am going to major in mathematics and minor in accounting and public affairs."

LaTisha Habersham

"Ever since I started this Program I have become more confident. It has taught me that nobody is perfect but also how to keep working on something even though it is tough."

Mabel Joseph

"This Program has helped me to become a better writer. There is a lot of writing involved in ESC 135, and the more I write, the better I get."

Kathy Ortiz

"The Program has been an extreme learning experience. I have been challenged. I wanted to drop this class at first, but I am really glad I did not. I always look forward to ESC 135 and to Pre-Teaching."

Sohail Qureshi

"An important way I’ve grown through the Program is in my social skills. I’ve matured and become more sophisticated. I’ve learned to say only words that are straight to the point."

Victoria Raphael

"Writing is not, and has never been, my strength. I often avoided writing essays and stayed away from clubs and the newspaper. There was a time when I thought I’d never be a good writer and that I was doomed to failure in college. My problem is not my thoughts, but how to organize and express them. However, ever since I have been Pre-Teaching and taking ESC 135, I have done a lot of writing, more than I would have liked, actually. Eventually, I realized I could do a really good job if I wanted to. This growth is important because writing is a part of life."

Malissa Rivera

"Since starting ESC 135, I have always known what my weakness was. I tried to evade it, but I knew that sooner or later I would have to pass through my frustration and work on solving the problem. What I didn’t expect was that in a short time I would see such an great improvement in my writing. I believe that I have grown a great deal in this area."

Celia Romero

"The Pre-Teaching Program offers rigor as well as interesting lessons. At times I struggle, but I am learning to conquer that. The Program has helped me get more in touch with myself intellectually. Coming to the ESC 135 class puts challenging content on a plate and allows me to try to take a bite out of it."

Christopher Severino

"Since entering the Program, I feel that I have grown more responsible, dependable, and trustworthy. I am much more responsible because I have learned how to do things on a schedule and in a timely fashion. Even though the ESC 135 class made me feel pressured, it was beneficial in that it helped me develop better academic skills."

Struggles Come

By Adam Echevarria

My life struggling, stomach hungry, it’s
Grumbling, I’m getting weak tumbling, falling
Crawling, on the floors of pain, which I
Wish I never saw, but no, struggles come,
Then they go dead when my life is done,
Struggles come and struggles go, but
I’m struggling out of control.

Friends

By Samantha Dolmo

People are sometimes not quite the people you thought you knew.
When you least expect it, your closest friend(s) can stab you in the back.
Who can you trust nowadays?
You thought your relationship was one in a million and could expand to a wonderful lifestyle,
but when you least expected it
(or turned your back),
things began to go down the drain.
Actions do carry consequences.
So if you decide to cheat or lie,
remember that this will come back to haunt you, because karma
always comes back around.
Who will you blame when things don’t turn out as you expect?
Who will you turn to when you have problems
or need advice about anything,
even life itself?
If you can’t trust the people you thought you knew, who can you trust?
Family can turn on you as well.
So don’t be surprised if you are left by yourself, with no-one to hold when you fall.
There are times when you have to lift yourself, come to your senses, face reality,
and ask yourself this question:
"Do you really think you know the person
you thought you knew
?"

What makes life? life

by Heidi Fernandez

What makes life? life,
It can be hard as
long as you know
what it’s needed for.
What makes life? life,
It is harsh but true
but there’s nothing to
know about it.
What makes life? life,
It’s a complete and painful
staff to deal with life
with your friends and family.
What makes life? life,
It’s a painful sleep
for you or anyone
else to deal with
What holds ahead
is life itself.

UntitLed

by Jeff AKA Deep

While I’m under the sheets
I see the Lord when I sleep
And often he speaks
You, Deep, you better get off the street
So I laid low, stayed home wit my rhyme book
Now police can’t say that it was
That car that I took
Three months later I’m out on the
Streets hustlin’ legally
‘Cause when I make money for my daily needs
I take it seriously
I ain’t afraid of death ‘cause
God wit me
You could take my life but a
Killa I ain’t afraid to be
Yo, beginners just don’t know
Deep is the name
That’s how my lyrics and bullets would go
People these days don’t know
About my deep flow

I’m a Black Poet

by Dorothea Ava Denise Young

I’m a black poet who believe in herself
I’m a black poet who knows who she is
I’m a black poet who cares for others’ feelings
I’m a black poet who knows where she’s from
I’m a black poet who’s strong and loving
I’m a black poet who loves her family
I’m a black poet who’s respectful
I don’t know the day I became a poet
I’ve been a poet since the third grade
But today I must share why I’m a black poet
And no man or woman can tell I’m
a sixteen-year-old girl
Please tell me I’m a black poet from your heart
This is why I wrote this poem – for all races
Who don’t know who I am.

In sympathy for my grandfather:
Mason Hover Limburger Young

Untitled Poem

By Osiris Perez

You thought that you was found
But really you was lost
You made others happy
But just what was the cost?
Your job is continuous
Though your mission is in vain
While making others better
You end up in pain
You was convicted of murder
But did you really do it?
The gun is in your hands
But did you really shoot it?
It really wasn’t you
But was it someone you knew?
Maybe it was a friend who
Considered you a brother
Or maybe it was a love
who was
Busy with another
You know who it was but the
Finger points at you
You’re already convicted
So now what do you do?

Dead Eyes Blind

By Adam Echevarria

To hold the guilt,
of being born and killed,
to be born without knowing about the world,
to my baby sister who died a little girl,
to come out of mother’s stomach,
I wish they would have taken my life
instead of hers,
I would have done it,
dead eyes blind,
can’t see the world because she’s dead
too many evil thoughts about this world
is what killed her,
damn I really miss my little sister.

No one lives here anymore

by Jenell Bryan

My head is filled with pain
As my brain rotates
I can’t speak what my eyes tell
I yearn to let those foul words roll off my tongue
I can’t feel happiness only
It ripping at my inside
You can see my pain
The work in my brain
I’m angry, I’m mad
My innocents, my innocents
I’ll kill him before I let it go to the grave

Lyrical Book

by Jeff AKA DEEP

The lyrical book in my head explains
My feelings & thoughts
I’m not like other people who
Steal feelings to break hearts
Believe it’s hard for me to die
Out when the love starts
And I would always be faithful
And play all my parts
Without my lyrical book
I’m cold, dumb, and heartless
And I want you to know that I’m playing
The part that honest
With my lyrical book I’m seeing
The bigger picture
And just by looking at you I’m really
The lucky painter
Take it to the shows we’ll be the
Lucky winner
You’ll win ‘cause of your beauty
I win cause I’m not a dreamer
That’s my lyrical book

Next

by Kim Williams

When is next?
Define next.
When you say next, act next.
You’ll be next week, month, year.
But when, if not now, then when?
To be continued next.
Laugh out loud.
It’s the next thing, time, place, or duty.
We’re to perform when asked and have done it Next.
It’s defined as an approach that’s not overridden by A decision, cause, or situation.
Don’t stick to it next; it will get you up in
A net or make you set.
Just remember if you say or ask, next.
Be next, stick to next.
The people have spoken nations through their
Mouths to be the next president and person,
But don’t ever procrastinate next if you can’t get up to it next.

"Dear Junior:"

Advice about college from the graduating class of 2005

From Priya Balgobin
(accepted at Lehman College)
"When you hear the word ‘college,’ what do you think of? College is a long process if you waste time. Applications are time-consuming, but when you start early, you can get through it like a piece of cake. I can tell you this because I started all my research and college applications at the beginning of my Senior year. Boy, was this stressful! I do not recommend wasting time."

From Tiffany Blagrove
(accepted at Long Island University, Sullivan Community College, Coppin State University, Morgan State University)
"Throughout my high school experience, I have learned many lessons on my own. I am writing this to give you the advice I wish someone would have given me, and that is to ALWAYS do your best in your high school classes, because your grades will effect the GPA that the colleges look at when they consider your acceptance. Doing your best means handing in ALL of your homework and being an active learner in class. It gets hard but, trust me, it is worth it."

From Cheyanne Garcia
(accepted at University of Buffalo, SUNY Oswego, SUNY New Paltz, Rider University)
"I knew I wanted to go to college back when I was a freshman, but I never really decided what colleges I wanted to look into. I used to say that I was going to apply to Michigan State because of their softball team or Boston College because my biological brother lives in Massachusetts. Next thing I knew it was September of my senior year and I had yet to complete one application, let alone decide on what schools I would be applying to. I don’t know where you stand academically, but if I had to pick one piece of advice to give, it would be to start thinking about colleges early. Keep your options open, your grades and attendance up, and a strong head on your shoulders. Applying to colleges is an extremely difficult and time-consuming process. It might even drive youto the point where all you want to do is give up. My response to that is...don’t. Giving up only takes you one place—nowhere."

From Alex Brooks
(Accepted at The City College of New York)
"Tuition and scholarships are a vital part of your college research. College expenses are enormous and getting help, even if it’s just for books, is strongly advised. Look for scholarships on the internet. There is so much money that’s available for scholarships. You can get scholarships for being African-American, Hispanic, a certain religion, left-handed, even for being the first member of your family to go to college. You must also decide if you are going to study away from home or in your area, There are private colleges, state universities, and city universities all over the nation, and each one has different requirements. Choose the one that best suits you and keep in mind that the quality of the school does not necessarily equal the quality of your education. A good student at a ‘lower quality’ school will learn more than an inattentive student at a ‘high quality’ school."

From Brittany Levestone
(accepted at Bronx Community College, NY College of Technology, Alfred State Univeristy)
"When you begin to see the price for colleges, it may scare you, but don’t let it stop you. There is financial aid and you can apply for scholarships. Also, you should have at least five or more colleges on your list. Use the "stretch, range, and safety" method of selecting colleges. You should have at least one college that will take more to get into (a stretch), one that you are pretty sure you can get in (a range), and one that you know for sure you will get in (a safety)."

From Joyce Susuko
(Accepted at Lehman College, St. John’s Univeristy, Old Westbury)
"Make sure to pick at least one safety school. Aim high, but always have a safety school–a college that you know you can definitely get into."

From Patricia Breton
(Accepted at Lehman College, Tompkins Cortland Community College, Dowling College)
"Have you started thinking about college? Well, I hope the answer is yes. If not, start your research now! Researching now makes things easier for tomorrow. Remember, always ask questions. Also, I recommend that you take college courses through the College Now Program to get college credit while still in high school. In addition, make sure you have community service hours. These activities look really good on college applications. I myself received 500 community service hours. If you are undecided about your major, don’t worry. You can decide once you are in college."

From Amanda Orgega
(Accepted at Cayuga Community College)
"You will know if a college is for you if it feels like home."

From Janill Guerreo
(Accepted at Lehman College)
"Please don’t forget to study for your SAT. The majority of colleges and universities look closely at your scores. If you’re weak at writing essays, start practicing. This is necessary for the new SAT, which contains a writing test."

From Angelie Solano
(Accepted at Lehman College)
"Plan to take the SAT more than once. Colleges take your highest scores."

From Kameela Lall
My advice to you is to work hard and strive for the best. During my years of high school, I became lazy at times. Looking back, this is my biggest regret. Why? Although I know I have the potential to be a 95+ student, I’m not. This reflects my work in my earlier years of high school. Being a Senior, it has become difficult to regain lost ground. You may think that now is too early to look into the colleges you would like to attend, but it’s not. In fact, it is best to research colleges while you are a Junior, so you won’t have to take the time for it during your Senior year. I did not do this, and in my Senior year I had the trouble of trying to research colleges, programs, and financial aid. If I did this in my Junior year, all I would have to do is get the applications, fill them out, write the essays, and send them in. Juniors, the clock is ticking, and your future is about to become your present. Good luck as Seniors.
