High-School Students study Psychology at Lehman College

October, 2002

As part of their program, tenth-grade students at the High School for Teaching and the Professions @ Walton take a psychology class on the Lehman College Campus.

The students are divided into two classes. On October 18, 2002, we visited the class that is team-taught by Professors Abigail McNamee and Nancy Dubetz.

We wanted to know–what do the students think of psychology?

"Psychology is the study of the way the mind works and the way the mind learns. I think all kinds of things that I have learned in this psychology class will be helpful. For example, today I learned how babies develop speech. I didn’t know that if a baby doesn’t hear its parents talk to it, then the baby will have problems speaking as it gets older."

–Kevin Garcia

MVC-008F.JPG (88958 bytes) "Psychology is the study of human thoughts, human needs; the study of human nature. It digs deep into the human emotion and attaches things to past actions and activities. I believe that psychology will help me in my high school years because once I grasp the real meanings of the word I will be able to get it down pat. It will help me deal with situations that I might come across in life."

"Psychology is meaning in itself. It is an expression of life and emotions. Psychology is about listening and hearing one person’s needs. It can help in any situation or problem." Denise Reyes (at right) Denise.jpg (22340 bytes)

"Psychology means to talk, help, and know how the mind works."

"I think that taking a psychology class will help you both in the future and the present, because when someone needs your helping hand, you will be able to say "I took psychology in high school and maybe I can be of assistance." It’s great to know that someone can call you over and say, ‘Can you please help me with a problem? I heard you’re good at problem-solving.’ It’s a great feeling when you’re helping someone. I should know because I’m a Peer Counselor at High School for Teaching and Professions @ Walton. I’m also planning on going to college so I can major in psychology!

MVC-006F.JPG (80844 bytes) "Psychology is the study of human nature and emotion. I think that the study of psychology is going to be helpful to me in high school and afterward, because you learn different things that deal with people and how they react to things. This will come in handy someday."

–Adelpha Rodriguez (center)

"I think psychology will help me because, as you get older, your emotions change. Your mind gets more developed and more adapted to the surroundings around you. Your emotions get deeper." –Priya Balgobin (at right)
MVC-005F.JPG (87192 bytes) "Psychology is a way of thinking about and feeling the study of human nature and emotions. I think that psychology will be helpful to me in high school and afterward, because I will learn about life."

"Psychology will help me in high school and later in life because my goal is to be a teacher. With a base in psychology, I will be able to help my students in high school. I will also be able to understand what I am feeling to help me grow and to be a better person and teacher someday."

–Princess Howz

"Psychology is a science. A psychologist is a person who can help you with problems or give you advice. I think psychology will help me because in high school you go through a lot of problems with your family, school, love relationships, etc."

–Denisha McFadden
