Project STARS Even Start Summer Program. For the past two years, the summer program for Even Start families was based on a generative theme, "Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies: Summer in the Bronx," designed and implemented in collaboration with community-based partners on the Project STARS Advisory Council. Highlights of the five-week, three-day-a-week program based in PS 396 (summer 2004) and PS 226 (summer 2005) were:

• health and nutrition literacy workshops for adults, provided by staff from Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Morris Heights Health Center;
• interactive literacy activities, including read alouds of children's literature, art-making and computer literacy, led by staff at the local Francis Martin branch of the New York Public Library; and
• weekly Bronx-based field trips to Orchard Beach (with excursions donated and led by the Urban Park Rangers), the Bronx Zoo (arranged by Literacy, Inc.), and family literacy activities and cookouts in neighboring Roberto Clemente State Park.
