About the Staff
Elaine Aguasvivas
Graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a BS in Economics. Worked as a Project Associate and College Access Advisor for the ENLACE Program of the Bronx Institute at Lehman College since 2010. Ms. Aguasvivas is a former ENLACE and GEAR UP ’99 student. Prior to her work at the BI, Elaine held a Counselor Advocate position with Career Visions Inc. and completed summer internships at government agencies such as the United States Department of State and as the International Trade Commission in Washington, DC.

Martha Atencio
Graduate of Universidad del Valle with BA in Modern Languages and Masters degree in Bilingual Education in her native Colombia. In 2003 received a Masters degree in TESOL from Lehman College. Joined The Bronx Institute in 2001 and is currently working as Program Associate for Management Systems. Ms. Atencio worked for 7 years as a teacher with the Colombian Board of Education.

Maria Betances
Graduate of City College of NY with a BA in sociology, Worked with the GEAR UP Program at Lehman College since its inception (1999) and presently working as Purchasing Manager for the Office of Information Management Systems.

Gonzalo Andres Estupinan
Graduated from Trinity College with a double major in International Studies and Hispanic Studies. Joined South Bronx GEAR UP in June 2008. In 2006, while abroad in Chile, Gonzalo worked for the children rights’ NGO “Raices.” This was a major turning point in his life, and it is what sparked his newfound interest in working in education and specifically working with children. Gonzalo hopes to provide his students with educational support and provide inspiration to make sure all his kids can reach their dreams.

Turquoise Farrar
Graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Business in 2004. Currently studying for an MS in Counseling at Mercy College. Worked as the Assistant Director of Admission for the past 5 years at The College of Mount Saint Vincent. Joined the Bronx Institute GEAR UP program in August 2009.

Shanell George
Graduate of Hunter College with a Masters in School Counseling and of Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Worked as a Human Resources intern at Stony Brook University’s Career Center and as a Counselor at Phillip Livingston elementary school and Professional Performing Arts (PPAS) high school. Joined the Bronx Institute in 2009 as a Project Associate of the GEAR UP program.

Justin Hertog
Graduate of Vassar College (1992) with a BA in Religion. Joined The Bronx Institute in 2008 as Communications Specialist. Previous position with Lehman College’s Office of Media Relations and Publications writing articles and contributing to other editorial projects. Worked for ten years in the information technology industry.

Bruce Irushalmi
Graduate of Lehman College (BA) and City College (MSEd). Joined The Bronx Institute at Lehman College in September, 2005 as Project Director of GEAR UP and Associate Director of The Institute. Served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Bronx Community School District Ten and Director of Youth Development in New York City Public Schools Bronx Region One until 2005. Worked as an adjunct in the Graduate Education Departments of Bank Street College and Hunter College.

Carmen A. Jiménez
Carmen is one of the first graduates of ASPIRA, MS (Hunter College), MS (Bank Street College of Education), and doctoral studies fellow (ABD—Seton Hall University) Joined The Bronx Institute at Lehman College in September, 2011 as Program Manager. Former Director for the Partnership School Organization—Academy for Educational Development’s Middle Start National Center. First Principal Director of the Professional Development Leadership Center (Region One); Middle School Principal for 13 years in the NYC Public Schools; Deputy Superintendent in Harlem; Director of School Improvement (District Ten); Manager of Program Planning and Development; Coordinator of Staff Development and Program Planning and Director of Training and Staff Development (Office of Bilingual Education). Faculty at Harvard Principal’s Center Summer Institutes and Advisory Board member for the Harvard Principal’s Center. Serves as adjunct faculty at MDLI Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Iffatara Khan
Graduated from Baruch College with a BBA in Human Resources. She joined The Bronx Institute in April 2010 and is presently working as an Administrative Associate.

Professor Herminio Martínez, Ph.D.
Professor Martinez is a tenured Professor in the Department of Middle School and High School Education. As principal investigator, he provides administrative leadership of funded programs, which include the following—ESEA Title VII/NCLB Title III, special and bilingual education teacher education and professional development programs, Federal and State technical assistance centers, desegregation centers, National Science Foundation projects, and federal, state, local, and foundation school reform projects; He serves on Boards such as the National Council of La Raza; the Audubon Partnership of NYC; the Private Industry Council; and the New York Hall of Science.

Willis G. Merchan
Joined The Bronx Institute as Information Technology Coordinator in January, 2008. Previously served as IT Center Support, IT Support Assistant, and Information Technology Center Coordinator (2nd Shift -T-) at Information Technology Resources at Lehman College. Served as Computer Lab Tech /Instructor for Research Foundation Center for School/College Collaboratives for three years.

Emmanuel Monnegro
Graduated Lehman College of CUNY with a BA in Health Management. Presently working in the ENLACE program as a Administrative Associate.

Daniel Morales-Armstrong
Graduate of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education with an Ed.M. in Prevention Science and Practice (concentrations in adolescent counseling, program design, and college persistence for students of color) and the University at Albany (SUNY) with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Worked in the College Advising Center at Fenway High School in Boston, Massachusetts (2010-2011). Joined the Bronx Institute in August 2011 as Assistant Director of the ENLACE program. Mr. Morales-Armstrong is a 2006 alumnus of the ENLACE program.

Iwan Notowidigdo
Graduate of Hunter College of CUNY (BA/MA in Economics). Joined The Bronx Institute in January, 2005 as Director for Sustainability. Served as Founding Director, New York City Bilingual Education Technical Assistance Center at Hunter College (2000-2004); Hunter College Coordinator, New York Technical Assistance Center (1995-2000); and Field Services Coordinator, New York Multifunctional Resource Center (1986-1995). Worked as a consultant to various local educational agencies, state departments of education, institutions of higher education, foundations, and community based organizations.

Isabel Pradas
Graduate of Manhattan College with a BA in Political Science and Urban Affairs, Isabel began her work in the field of youth development at Aspira of New York in 1996. She left Aspira as the Director of the Educational Talent Search program to explore her interest in public policy by pursuing her Masters degree at the Milano Graduate School and working for Milano's Center for New York City Affairs. Joined the Bronx Institute in 2006 as the Project Associate for College Awareness and serves currently as Team Leader and Project Associate for GEAR UP Network.

Geobany Rodriguez
Graduate of Boston University (BA). Currently studying visual arts and arts education at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Joined The Bronx Institute as a Project Associate in 2007. Worked at the Citizen’s School in Boston and Worked for three years as a Counselor in the Prep for Prep program, responsible for helping students navigate tough academic and cultural environments of their new independent schools. Geobany traveled with the Experiment in International Living and led students on an ecological tour through Costa Rica.

LaRae Snoddy
Graduate of Lawrence University (BA in Philosophy & Spanish) and Edgewood College (MA in Education). Joined The Bronx Institute in November 2007 as a Project Associate for the South Bronx GEAR UP. Served as an Admissions Counselor at Edgewood College, where she was responsible for counseling and recruitment and also coordinated Community and Pre-college programs. Worked as a grant writing intern for the Wisconsin Foundation of Independent Colleges in 2004.

Giselle Tejada
Graduated from University of Massachusetts-Amherst (2006), with a BA in Psychology and Adelphi University (2010), with a Masters of Social Work. Has worked assisting high school students with the college application process through preparatory workshops, including partnerships with community organizations. By exposing and linking the student to key resources, she has managed to inspire and motivate them to achieve their professional and academic goals.

Azuka Utti
Currently attending Lehman College pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. Has been working at the Bronx Institute as a college assistant since spring of 2011.

Dita Wolf
Graduate of Lehman College (BA) and College of New Rochelle (MSEd). Fellow of the Institute for Learning, University of Pittsburgh (1999-2001) and Center for the Study of Expertise in Teaching and Learning (2005-2006). Joined The Bronx Institute at Lehman College in August, 2006 as Program Manager. Served as teacher, librarian, assistant principal and principal of P.S. 7, The Kingsbridge School, until 2006.
