Bronx Institute Awarded $200,000 Grant
from New York Life Foundation to Support
a New ENLACE Cohort

The Bronx Institute at Lehman College ENLACE Latino Collegiate Society has been awarded a two-year, $200,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation to recruit a new cohort of highly motivated Latino high school students from low-income families in The Bronx. Selected students will receive year-round rigorous academic instruction with a special emphasis on advanced mathematics and science. ENLACE is a nationally-recognized out-of-school academic enrichment program, which currently has an eighth grade, ninth grade, eleventh grade, and college cohort.

“The New York Life Foundation’s generous grant will help promising and determined young Latinos fulfill their academic potential, explore their career interests, and enter and succeed in college with confidence,” said Professor Herminio Martinez, Executive Director of The Bronx Institute at Lehman College and a faculty member in the Department of Middle and High School Education. “The Bronx Institute is very grateful for the support of the New York Life Foundation.”

Established in 2001, ENLACE gives students the skills and experiences needed to gain acceptance to specialized pre-college programs, to graduate from high school with honors and advanced New York State Regents High School diplomas, to prepare for and be accepted at academically prominent public and private universities, and to become leaders in high technology industries where Latinos are habitually underrepresented.

The New York Life Foundation was established by the New York Life Insurance Company in 1979 to support programs that benefit young people, particularly in the areas of mentoring, the establishment of safe places to learn and grow, educational enhancement opportunities and childhood bereavement. The Foundation also encourages and facilitates the community involvement of employees, agents, and retirees of New York Life through its Volunteers for Life program.
