   Message from the Executive Director

Welcome to The Bronx Institute of Lehman College. The Bronx Institute is committed to improving educational outcomes for students in The Bronx and neighboring regions. I invite you to examine our initiatives and contact us to become involved in our various programs and efforts. We have formed partnerships with organizations and agencies from the public and private world to provide high quality support services at a level of effort that will ensure the academic success of the students we serve.

-  Professor Herminio Martinez, Executive Director

Dr. Herminio Martinez is Professor of Middle and High School Education and Executive Director of The Bronx Institute of Lehman College, CUNY. During his tenure, The Bronx Institute has evolved into a multimillion dollar organization serving more than eight thousand Bronx students and families.

Professor Martinez is an experienced teacher, administrator, and academician. Prior to joining Lehman College, he served as Associate Provost, Associate Dean, and Department Chair at Baruch College of the City University of New York. Previously Professor Martinez had served as Associate Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Professor Martinez has served on the Board of Directors of numerous community and public service organizations. These include the following: The National Council of La Raza (NCLR); the Goldman Sachs New Venture Fund; the Private Industry Council of the City of New York; the United States Senate Bi-Partisan Committee on Hispanic Affairs; the New York Urban Coalition; the Audubon Partnership for Economic Development; the Women in Prison Association; United Way; and the American Jewish Committee.

Professor Martinez' areas of concentration include second language acquisition and learning, cross cultural education, and management. He has directed numerous research, professional development, and technical assistance programs at Lehman College. In addition, he has worked extensively with State Education Departments, School Districts, colleges and universities, and non-profit organizations in the Northeast, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Professor Martinez has extensive experience as a consultant in the fields of second language acquisition and learning, management, and public policy.

Professor Martinez has received awards and recognition from numerous organizations for his work. These include: The New York State Assembly (Educator of the Year 2006); the Cuban National Planning Council; the National Council of La Raza and the "EL" Award from EL Diario La Prensa in November 2006.
