Undergraduate Program

The Department of Music offers a 59-credit major in music leading to the B.S. degree. The undergraduate program offers a general program of study with emphasis on theory, musicianship, history, and performance within a liberal arts college curriculum. Graduates of the music program will be prepared for further study in all avenues of music. Successful graduates have gone on to careers in education, journalism, performance, and music technology. Acceptance and placement in theory, musicianship, and performance courses will be by exams and interviews administered by appropriate faculty.

Graduate Program

The MAT program is a professional degree for those who would teach in the public schools. It leads to New York State permanent certification. The combined master's degree in applied music and music teaching offers a student with a bachelor's degree who has already developed a professional level of performance ability the opportunity to continue serious study in music while simultaneously developing teaching options. The program is designed to prepare students for K-12 certification. Students will be assigned fieldwork and student teaching, and will be supervised by faculty members in the Departments of Music, Early Childhood and Childhood Education, and Middle and High School Education. Graduate advisers or coordinators of the three departments will provide counseling.
