OUR HISTORY
AND PURPOSE
Founded in
2003 at Lehman College of the City University of New York, the society seeks to
foster a better understanding of early analytic philosophy by examining the
work of its founders and of its important early contributors. These individuals
include Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Frank Ramsey, and
G. E. Moore, but also Bolzano, Rudolf Carnap, Otto Neurath, Edmund Husserl,
Meinong, and many others who directly or indirectly influenced the course of
analytic philosophy.
WHAT WE DO
HEAPS
contributes a group session to the Eastern, Central and, sometimes, the Pacific
Division of the annual American Philosophical Association conference. The purpose of the sessions is solely
to attract interesting speakers and audiences who address topics of interest to
our members. Group sessions at the Eastern are typically two hours long, with
three sections of 40 minutes for the speaker (who takes about 20-25 minutes),
the respondent, and audience. At the Central group sessions last three hours,
and each of the three 60 minute segments is divided between a speaker (who
takes about 30-35 minutes), a commentator, and questions from the audience.
