Modern Facilities

Graduate students' early clinical education takes place at the Lehman College Speech and Hearing Center. Graduate students complete two supervised clinical and diagnostic practica under the supervision of full-time faculty and experienced adjunct clinicians. The Speech and Hearing Center is located on two floors in the Speech building and has individual and group therapy rooms with observation areas for family and student observers, seminar rooms, and playrooms. All therapy rooms in the second floor clinic are equipped with desktop computers. The entire clinic is equipped with current technology which permits video observation and taping of clinical sessions. A wireless audio system provides ongoing supervisor-student interaction.

In their academic coursework, students obtain instruction and laboratory experience using objective acoustic and physiologic instrumentation. In clinical and diagnostic practica, students are provided with opportunities to integrate instrumentation into clinical practice. The Speech and Hearing Center maintains the following acoustic instrumentation for the assessment and treatment of speech and voice:

  • Computerized Speech Laboratory (CSL-4400)
  • Visipitch IV (3950)
  • Nasometer (6200)
  • Nasometer II (6400)

In addition, the laboratory is equipped with physiologic instrumentation for measuring air volume, dynamic air pressure, and airflow. Movements of the chest wall can be monitored for qualitative analysis. A laryngograph is available for monitoring vocal fold medial contact area.

In addition individual therapy rooms are equipped with desktop computers with internet access. Students also have access to computer stations in the Center and in the College Computer Laboratory. The Center maintains a clinical library that includes textbooks and professional journals, which supplement our expanding campus library where students have access to print and electronic journals and databases such as Academic Search Premiere, ERIC, LLBA, and MEDLINE.

Audiologic screenings/evaluations and graduate student practicum in audiology are conducted in the Speech and Hearing Center's audiology suite.
