NYC Metro  (NY, NJ, CT)  Zipcode Statistics for 2010

Print this document and read carefully to see the items of most interest to you. They include basic demographic and ethnic items, as well as information on family structure.  All are from the 2010 Census.

Zipcodes (the Census version is called ZCTA) seem to be the most practical small geographic unit for the New York City metropolitan area.  They are familiar to most local people.  Almost all of them are large enough to use statistically but small enough to encompass neighborhoods.  County and neighborhood designations are included for each zipcode in the accompanying file.  Over 95% of all the zipcodes here have a population of at least 1000;  over 95% also have a population under 65,000.

Three of these zipcodes require special explanations.  Manhattan’s 10021 has had parts amputated and now includes three (a new, smaller 10021, plus 10065 and 10075).  The old 10021 is included here in addition to the newer three.   Zipcode 10463 has always included a part of Manhattan (Marble  Hill) but its major territory  is in The Bronx.  In this file, the Marble Hill part has been separated and relabeled “10063”. (We finally recognize that Manhattan is not just an island; it has a place on the North American continent !)  Finally, Queens zipcode 11370 has been split, since it includes the Rikers Island prison, which is in The Bronx.  The Rikers component  is renumbered “10450”.

For the “new” divisions in these three zipcodes, only figures for total population and basic ethnic groups are given here.

There are other zipcode changes, but they are minor and have not been tampered with.

Below is the list of variables in the zipcode file.  Each VARIABLE NAME is in caps,

followed by a brief definition.  In the Excel file for each zipcode, the VARIABLE NAME will appear,  but  not the definition.  Names are fairly clear for demographic and ethnic items, but may be obscure for family structure, so PRINT THIS DOCUMENT for your own use.   Then access the Excel file metzips2010 and save it for yourself.
