New York Metro Area Zipcode Statistics for 2000

Print this document and read carefully to see the items of most interest to you.  Most items come from the 2000 Census, including socio-economic items released in August, 2002.  For some ethnic data we compare the 2000 figures with data from the 1990 census.

First check the list of variables below.  Each variable is in caps, followed by a brief definition.  For each variable, figures are given for the entire State of  New York, all of New York City, and the entire Bronx.  The figures should give you a "benchmark" to use when you get the figures for zipcodes that interest you.

Access the EXCEL file zips902k and save it to your own diskette or hard drive.  You now have all the items you see here, for each zipcode in New York City, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, and Nassau counties.  You can edit your personal version of this file to get data just for the zipcodes you want.

To study just the zipcodes that interest you, in your personal version of the EXCEL file, click on the first row (the variable titles) on the extreme left of the spreadsheet.  Hold down the CTRL key and click (again at the extreme left) each zipcode that interests you.  Then at the top, click "Edit" "Copy".

At the end of the spreadsheet, go to the row after the last zipcode and click the cell at the left (Column A).  Then click "Edit"  "Paste Special "  "Transpose".   You will then be able to print the zipcodes you want in the most readable format.

Special Note:  For the 2000 data only, two zipcodes have been changed.  We have separated Rikers Island, which is in The Bronx,  from Queens zipcode 11370 and have designated it "10450", so it goes at the beginning of the Bronx zips.  And we have divided zipcode 10463, which includes both southern Riverdale in The Bronx, and Marble Hill in Manhattan.  For the 2000 figures, we have designated the Marble Hill section "10063", so it is together with all the other Manhattan zips.  In this file zipcode 10463 includes only The Bronx for 2000 figures.
