Welcome

Message from Dean of Division of Natural & Social Sciences, Dr. Edward L. Jarroll

Welcome to the Home Page for the Division of Natural and Social Sciences, the largest Division of Lehman College. Natural and Social Sciences is the home of thirteen departments of the college including: Anthropology; Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Economics, Accounting and Business Administration; Environmental, Geographic and Geological Sciences; Health Sciences; Mathematics and Computer Science; Nursing; Physics and Astronomy; Political Science; Psychology; Sociology and Social Work. Over 160 full-time faculty reside in the Division and teach both undergraduate and master's courses on campus as well as participate in doctoral programs at The CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan.

Construction has begun on a new state-of-the-art environmentally "green" science facility, which will provide expanded opportunities and resources for teaching and learning, faculty and student research, and preparation for science-based careers.

The Division is also home to the CUNY doctoral program in Plant Sciences, working in close association with the New York Botanical Garden. The faculty are renowned not only for their excellence in teaching, but also for their scholarship and research. Many of the faculty are recipients of grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Defense, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, just to cite a few examples. Quite often faculty and students, both graduate and undergraduate, form research teams investigating current topics and present their results at regional, national and international meetings. A majority of our departments possess their own, modern computer classrooms and faculty often incorporate new technologies into their teaching.

The Division strives to maintain an exciting, expanding curriculum, responding to the changing needs of the 21st century and our special mission as the only public four-year college in the Bronx. Our new Bachelor's in Business Administration (BBA) is attracting many new students. New Master's degrees in both Social Work and Public Health help address critical needs, not only in the Bronx, but all of New York City.

Many of our departments and individual faculty retain strong community ties and often bring their knowledge and expertise directly into the neighborhoods. Students are encouraged to follow this example and share their talents with others.

The Division shares the overall mission of the College to provide students with a comprehensive liberal arts and sciences background, while preparing them for specific careers and advanced study. We invite you to join our engaged community of faculty, staff and students in seeking these goals.
