The Urban GISc Lab focuses on exploring the
urban environment through Geographic Information Science. Current
research areas include spatial analyses of urban environmental burdens,
environmental justice, health disparities, health and the built
environment, urban demographics, hazard and risk assessments, and the
connections between social and environmental conditions.
Major support for these research projects has
been provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA). The Urban GISc Lab in Lehman Colleges’s EGGS
Department is a participating institution in NOAA-CREST, the
Cooperative Center for Remote Sensing and Technology at City University
of New York. Other major funding comes from the National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, as part of the South Bronx
Environmental Justice Partnership project, which is a consortium of
university, medical, and community-based organizations working together
to improve health in the Bronx. The Urban GISc Lab also receives
on-going research support from the University and the PSC-CUNY
union.
Students with a strong interest in conducting
urban environmental analysis with GISc should visit the Urban GISc Lab
to see examples of our work, or contact Professor Maantay to discuss
potential internship or research opportunities on these current
projects. Links to the profiles of some of the current projects
and publications are listed below.
