Introduction

From the Distinguished Professor Eugene Chudnovsky

The Department of Physics and Astronomy prepares students for careers in government, industry, and academia. Physics majors may choose either a 36-credit program leading to a B.A. degree or a 55-credit program leading to a B.S. degree.

The Department also administers the Pre-Engineering program and offers a variety of basic courses designed for general education and for students in other departments. The Department cooperates with the Department of Middle and High School Education in preparing students and teachers for teaching physics and astronomy in secondary schools.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has the largest number of research publications among all Lehman departments. Undergraduate students who are interested in doing research are welcome to join our research groups. Graduate students are invited to choose a Ph.D. advisor from our world-renowned experts in relativistic field theory, quantum optics, and condensed matter physics. Our faculty's research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and from other federal and private sources.
