Overview

From the Department Chair, Dr. Madeline H. Moran

The Department of Sociology and Social Work offers a 30-credit program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. The Department also offers a minor in Sociology.

The Sociology Program meets the academic and pre-professional needs of sociologists and teachers. The course of study provides training in research methods, data analysis and computer applications for careers in social research. The program also leads to careers in other fields, examples of which can be found in Professional Opportunities. There are approximately 650 Sociology majors. While half plan to teach, a growing number is preparing to go to graduate school or take immediate positions in government, industry or social service.

The best time to see a faculty advisor about your course of study is several weeks before you register. When you come in for the first time, please bring with you a transcript of all college courses taken here or at another school and, if you are a transfer student, the transfer evaluation form that you were given in Shuster Hall. If you do not have an evaluation of your transfer credits, you may obtain one in Shuster Hall, Room 161.

From the Director of the Social Work Program, Dr. Norma Kolko Phillips

Welcome to the website for the Social Work programs.

A few items of importance:

  • As you will see from reading the missions of both programs, our curriculum is designed to prepare ethical and competent social workers for practice in the urban environment. Our undergraduate curriculum is generalist and prepares students for entry-level professional practice, and our graduate curriculum is advanced generalist, preparing students for leadership positions, including direct practice, supervision, administration, policy practice, and research. Both programs are intended to prepare students for work in social service agencies and organizations serving urban populations.
  • Our undergraduate and graduate programs are separate, with different admissions requirements and application procedures. It is important that students applying to the undergraduate program with the intention of continuing with graduate studies in Social Work understand that acceptance into the undergraduate program in no way implies or facilitates acceptance into our M.S.W. program.

The applications to the undergraduate program and the M.S.W. program can be downloaded from this site. The undergraduate application is also available in Room B-18 of Carman Hall, or you can request it by calling 718-960-8192. The application to the M.S.W. program may also be requested from the Office of Graduate Admissions in Room 150 of Shuster Hall. Be sure to specify your interest in applying to the M.S.W. program, as there is a special application for this program.

We welcome your interest in the Social Work programs. The faculty will be happy to answer questions you may have. Both undergraduate and graduate faculty are located in Carman Hall, Room B-18.
