PHY167: Lecture program until the end of Spring 2020

Week Tuesday Thursday
5 April Spring recess. Read Ch. 22 Electromagnetic waves in Giancoli book. Mostly qualitative material. You need to know the basic parameters of a wave: amplitude, period, frequency, speed, wave length, and relations between them. Ch.23: Light and geometrical optics. Reflection, rays. Plane mirror. Virtual images.
12 April Spherical mirrors. Concave mirror. Ray diagrams. Paraxial rays. Mirror equation. Magnification. Real and virtual images. Sign conventions. Convex mirror. Light in transparent media. Refraction index. Snell's law. Total internal reflection. Prism.
19 April Converging and diverging lenses. Focal distance, lensmaker's equation. Lens equation. Telescope and microscope.
26 April Ch.24: Wave theory of light. Huygens principle and diffraction. Interference. Constructive and destructive interference. Double-slit interference. Dispersion. Diffraction by single slit. Diffraction grating.
3 May Interference by thin films. Problem solving. Polarization. Polarizers. Natural and coherent light.
10 May Problem solving Midterm 3
