Strategic Plan

October 4th, 2006

Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni and Friends,

Shaping the future of Lehman College is a dynamic process that requires self-study, reflection, imagination, and hard work. It draws on the wisdom and experiences of our community—faculty, administrators, staff, students, alumni, and friends. It understands the needs and expectations of the people and publics we serve. It involves making difficult choices, and it accepts the inevitability of changing circumstances and opportunities.

From this living, breathing, collaborative human process, a modern strategic plan is derived—a plan that will guide us from the here-and-now to the closing years of the first decade of the twenty-first century. This plan embodies our mission and vision, our goals, objectives, and our strategies for meeting those goals. It emphasizes performance, transparency, and accountability for our human and financial resources. It is also part of a larger design by the City University, which includes the Chancellor’s new “Compact for Public Higher Education” that calls on four partners—city and state governments, private donors, students, and the colleges—to share the costs of funding the 20 CUNY campuses (see www.cuny.edu).

More than a year ago, we presented a strategic plan for 2005–2007, and now we have refreshed and updated that plan, going forward to 2008. Seven goal teams, made up of faculty, students, and staff, have updated strategies, timelines, action plans, and accountability measures in their respective areas. They removed objectives that were already accomplished or are no longer consistent with our goals. They added new objectives in response to emerging priorities and opportunities.

As you can see from this new “Scope of Work,” the forward-looking and fluid nature of the strategic planning process does not allow us to rest on our accomplishments. The primary emphasis will always be on doing more and doing better for our students.

We will continue to move Lehman College forward in a thoughtful, deliberate way. As we do so, the campus community will be engaged in meaningful ways in the planning process. We will also keep you informed of our progress toward accomplishing the goals and objectives we have set for ourselves.

Sincerely,
Ricardo R. Fernández, Ph.D.
