Noted Professor of Latin American History to Give Lecture March 8
Born in a barrio near San Juan, Puerto Rico, Professor Chinea moved to New York City at 13. Surrounded by crime, gangs and drugs, he fought his way out of the slums of New York to the world of academia. Professor Chinea teaches history and also serves as director of the Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies at Wayne State University. He has published several works about Latino culture.
Professor Chinea earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from SUNY Binghamton and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. In 2005, he received the Irish Latin American Research Fund Award.
