Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science's Scholarship and Mentorship Program is now accepting applications for the Fall 2006 semester. The program is open to undergraduates who have completed introductory courses in the computing or mathematics majors and to students in the computing or mathematics master's programs.

This two-year program offers scholarships for tuition and a laptop computer for the student's exclusive use, as well as individualized mentoring and career preparation. It also helps to place students in research and internship programs. The laptops, which students will be able to keep when they graduate, come with cutting-edge Linux and Maple software that complements class work and future career goals.

Students must complete five workshops and two advising sessions per semester. First-year students take part in workshops on career counseling, computer maintenance and software instruction. Second-year students become interns in an industrial setting, strengthening their experiences and increasing their job readiness. Funds for the Lehman program are provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

National Science Foundation scholarship recipients must:

  • Be U.S. citizens, nationals, refugee aliens or permanent resident aliens at the time of application;

  • Demonstrate financial need (meaning you must be eligible for a U.S. Department of Education Pell Grant or for Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need);

  • Be enrolled full-time in computer science, computing and management and/or mathematics degree programs at either the bachelor's or master's level at Lehman College.

Applicants do not have to be enrolled at Lehman at the time of application, but the scholarship can be awarded only if they are admitted to Lehman and enroll full-time for the upcoming semester (Fall 2006). Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants who have finished the basic skills courses and the first-year courses for their major with a Grade Point Average of 2.8 or higher. Graduate applicants must complete all undergraduate courses required for the degree.
