Kathy Murphy and Colleen Murphy visit Kylemore Abbey in Connemara-Galway during Lehman's winter session, January '07.
Lehman College's Institute for Irish-American Studies (Carman 188) will offer a study-abroad program this summer to Ireland: a six-credit undergraduate program (the equivalent of Lehman's IRI103 and IRI104 Elementary Irish I & II) from July 20-August 17, 2007. The costs of the Connemara-Galway trip is $2650 plus airfare. Tuition is included in this price.
The Irish language program will be hosted by the National University of Ireland, Galway, in its An Cheathrú Rua (Carraroe) facility. This will be the third trip that CUNY has sponsored to this village. Five students studied Irish with Lehman College in Connemara-Galway last month during winter session. It is hoped with the STOCS scholarships, more Lehman students will be able to take advantage of this great opportunity.
Dr. Thomas Ihde, director of the CUNY Institute for Irish-American Studies, believes that "this is a great chance to jump start your Irish language learning. For students who need to fulfill their foreign language requirement at Lehman, we will be offering a third course online in the fall through the Department of Languages and Literatures."
Funded by a grant from the DeWitt Wallace/Youth Travel Enrichment Fund at The New York Community Trust, the STOCS Project is in its second decade of service to CUNY students. Thousands of CUNY students have benefited from STOCS, a program that helps students discover the many worlds outside New York and bring that knowledge home to the CUNY community. The STOCS Project stands as a testament to the promise of CUNY: international education for a remarkably international student body.
