Bronx Families Are Making High School Count

Bronx parents and their children attend a conference hosted by the Bronx Institute at Lehman on understanding the New York City high school system.

The Bronx Institute at Lehman College is helping Bronx families make the most of their children's high school education. Last month, over 200 Bronx eighth-graders and their families attended a GEAR UP Network Conference, titled "Making High School Count."

Students and their families listened to panel discussions on topics ranging from choosing the right high school and understanding the report card to preparing financially for college. The five-person panel included education professionals, a financial consultant, and CUNY University Admissions Director Richard Alvarez.

As Bronx Institute Executive Director Herminio Martinez notes, many of the families who participate in the GEAR UP Network schools are immigrants who are unfamiliar with New York City's high school system. "Our goal is to give these families and their children the necessary support to have a viable high school education leading to college acceptance and attendance."

The Bronx Institute at Lehman College is committed to working with students and their families in the Bronx to support educational opportunities. The Institute works closely with the NYC Department of Education to ensure that students in the Bronx graduate successfully from high school and enter college.
