EdCast Tackles Education Issues

Professor Linda Hirsch and Professor Jim Carney

Journalism, Communication and Theatre Professor Jim Carney and Professor Linda Hirsch of Hostos Community College are the hosts of EdCast, a new monthly cablevision program. The show will debut on Wednesday, March 21, on CUNY-TV (Channel 75 for Time Warner Cable and Cablevision subscribers).

Councilman Robert Jackson will be the show's first guest. He will discuss the Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit, which could channel tens of millions of dollars to New York City Schools. The segment will explore why the funds are needed and how they should be spent.

Much like the education segment produced for BronxNet's BronxTalk and Open, the new program is aimed at non-educators, and will tackle such issues as teacher education; the effects of the "No Child Left Behind Act"; how children learn to read and write; trends in science and math education; gender in the classroom; the role of the arts on literacy development; and other noteworthy topics.

EdCast will also feature field reports on the state of education in New York City, as well as interviews and on-site visits with newsmakers and educators. The program will include a news segment, titled "EdBytes," that will recap news and developments in the education world and will be accompanied by e-mails and viewer feedback.

Professor Hirsch is an expert on literacy development among both native and non-native speakers of English. She is the education consultant and producer of an education segment on BronxNet's Open, which is broadcast live. She has also been a content consultant on the PBS series Ghostwriter.

Prior to joining the faculty at Lehman, Professor Carney was CEO of BronxNet. Working both in front of and behind the camera and microphone, he has earned dozens of awards, including CableAce awards and a New York Emmy.
