Music Department to Host Annual Sala Wind Competition March 31
To qualify, entrants must reside in the lower Hudson Valley region, which includes New York City, Long Island, northern New Jersey, and Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, and Orange Counties. Candidates are required to bring an accompanist and play a woodwind or brass wind solo suitable for wind band (e.g., Haydn Trumpet Concerto or Chaminade Concertino for Flute). Contestants will be judged on technical skill and artistic presentation.
The winner of the first prize will receive a $500 scholarship and perform his or her piece with the Lehman College Community Band in concert on Sunday, May 20. The runner up will receive a $200 scholarship and perform with the band at a later date, schedule permitting.
The competition is named after the late Professor Jerome Sala of Lehman's music faculty, who taught music history and appreciation, instrumental methods, and for 20 years directed the Lehman College Community Band.
For more information about the competition, contact the Music Department at (718) 960-8247 or music.department@lehman.cuny.edu.
