How Should Reading Be Taught? Tune in to 'EdCast' April 18

EdCast

In the next installment of EdCast on Wednesday, April 18, co-hosts Professor James Carney (Journalism, Communication, and Theatre) and Professor Linda Hirsch (English) of Hostos Community College will discuss how reading should be taught in the classroom.

Through interviews with leading literacy experts and a site visit to a nursery school, the program will examine how children are prepared for literacy in the pre-K years and discuss how children learn to read in the school years.

The discussion moves away from the politics of reading to a close examination of the pedagogical principles that underlie this critical skill. Guests Dr. Marion Blank from Columbia University and Professor Peggy McNamara from the Bank Street College of Education will talk about what children need to know and learn to become successful readers.

Edcast is a new monthly program airing over CUNY-TV (Channel 75 for Cablevision and Time Warner subscribers). The program is aimed at non-educators and will tackle such issues as teacher education, the effects of the "No Child Left Behind Act," trends in science and math education, gender in the classroom, and the role of the arts in literacy development.
