April 18 Talk on Language Disorders in Multilingual Speakers

Professor Mira Goral
Professor Mira Goral
Professor Mira Goral (Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences) will discuss language disorders in multilingual speakers on Wednesday, April 18, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in Room 221 of Carman Hall. Hosted by the College's Women's Studies Program, the talk is free and open to both the campus and the public.

The talk will center on aphasia, a language impairment resulting from brain, typically following a stroke. Professor Goral will focus on core concepts of multilingualism, basic definitions of aphasia, and signs of aphasia in multilingual individuals. She will also tackle issues concerning language treatment in multilingual speakers with aphasia who belong to more than one culture.

Studies have examined patterns of language deficit in monolingual speakers with aphasia, as well as the course of their recovery following language treatment. Yet, questions remain about how aphasia affects those who are multilingual, such as whether the impairment is comparable in all languages and which of the languages works best for treatment.

Professor Goral received her doctoral degree at the CUNY Graduate Center. She was a postdoctoral scholar and later a researcher on the Language in the Aging Brain Project and the Harold Goodglass Aphasia Research Center in Boston. Her research interests include neurolinguistics of bilingualism, language and cognition in older age, and first-language attrition.
