Hillel Chapter to Hold Holocaust Remembrance Day Event April 16

Star of David
Lehman's Hillel chapter will sponsor a Holocaust Remembrance Day event on Monday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Music Building Recital Hall (Room M-306). Rabbi Manny Viñas of the Lincoln Park Jewish Center in Yonkers will speak, and the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale Choir will sing songs in Hebrew and Yiddish, as well as a selection from Verdi's Nabucco. The campus community is invited to join in this commemoration.

Hillel is the world's largest Jewish campus organization, providing opportunities for Jewish students at more than 500 colleges and universities to explore and celebrate their Jewish identity. The Lehman chapter of Hillel was formed last spring under the leadership of Lehman student Brooke Greenberg and Prof. Zelda Newman, the chapter's faculty advisor.

"I would like to believe that all Lehman's neighbors, non-Jews as well as Jews, will feel moved to spend this hour with us," said Professor Newman, in extending the invitation to the community beyond Lehman to attend the event. "What happened more than half a century ago reflected on the world at large, and it is the world at large that needs to continue to reflect on it."

Rabbi Viñas grew up in a traditional Sephardic home of Cuban Jewish parents in Miami. In 1989, he received his B.A., magna cum laude, in psychology and social sciences from Touro College and went on to earn a master's degree in social work at Hunter College. Rabbi Viñas has "Yoreh Yoreh" ordination from Kollel Agudath Achim and Yeshivah VeKollel Zichron Hizkiahu Yoel, both in Boro Park, Brooklyn, and he is continuing his studies for ordination as a Dayan (a judge). He also founded and directs El Centro de Estudios Judios "Torat Emet," a Spanish-language Jewish education and spirituality center for Jews from Latin America who are living in the New York area.
