Faculty Expert on Peru to Give Talk April 18

Professor Jose Rénique
The author of three books and several articles on Latin America, Professor Rénique will discuss his experience researching political violence in the Peruvian Andes over the course of two decades. Experts believe that his two most recent books have transformed how historians will look at Shining Path, a group of Maoist guerrillas that sought to overthrow the government of Peru during the 1980s and 1990s. One book recorded oral histories of the prison experiences of Shining Path members; the other presented a sweeping history of agrarian conflict in Peru since the 1860s.
His next book will examine the history of Peruvian-Chilean relations in the nineteenth century. Professor Rénique also played an active role in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Peru and is incorporating what he learned from serving on that commission in his teaching at Lehman.
Over the years, Professor Rénique has received numerous grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Inter-American Foundation, the National Endowment for Humanities, and other agencies and organizations. A graduate of the Universidad Catolica del Peru in Lima, he earned his master's and doctoral degrees from Columbia University.
This presentation is the second in a series of lectures given by faculty recipients of Lehman's 2006 Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Works. For more information, call 718-960-8222.
